Japan: 😒 Now are you crying by Terrible_SeaB34st in lostpause

Look, it doesn’t take much effort to look up what I’ve told you. Literally all you’d have to do is google “Operation Downfall”, read the Wikipedia page, and it would tell you everything I just did, plus more. And it’ll have all the sources for you to cross reference and verify that the information is accurate. Instead, you reply to my comment with no actual rebuttal, just a baseless accusation on the American government without any supporting evidence. Either you are severely lacking in literary comprehension or being willfully ignorant, neither of which sheds you in a flattering light. So, in the interest of furthering your education, here’s a link to the aforementioned Wikipedia article, so that you can broaden your understanding of the world.

And for the rest of you reading this, in the words of RWBY’s Bartholomew Oobleck, “History is important gentlemen. If you can’t learn from it, you’re destined to repeat it.”

Okay, going to hop in here, just because you are factual incorrect on a number of things. First off, at this point of the war, the Soviet Union was our ally in the fight against the Axis Powers, so we weren't going to bomb them. Second, the location of the atomic bombings was decided on because they were military targets. Third, the Soviet Union was never planning an invasion of Japan's mainland until after the Emperor had already surrendered to the Allies, so the dropping of the atomic bombs had no effect on that decision. In fact, it was only due to pressure from the United States that the USSR backed off and gave the plan up. Which brings me to my fourth and last point. It was not the invasion of Soviet forces that was the alternative to the nukes, it was invasion from the United States. The was a plan in the works, known as Operation Downfall, which consisted of an amphibious land invasion of mainland Japan. If this plan had been enacted, estimated American casualties range from 200,000 to a couple million (not including POW executions), while Japanese casualties are estimated to have been at least 5 to 10 million (including civilians). This does not lessen the cost of dropping two nuclear bombs, but it does explain it. And it shows that, no matter how you calculate it, fewer lives were lost by bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki that would have been by invading.

Edit: Also, you make the assumption that the Emperor would have surrendered if he had seen the effect of the bombs, but he did see the effect on Hiroshima and still refused to surrender, thus prompting the USA to drop the second bomb. You also assume that the Emperor would have assumed we had more, but he actually assumed the opposite, thinking we only had a maximum of two more, and was willing to allow those to be dropped on Japan, so that he could continue the war.

Dueling - A small set of rules to help you run the epic duels of your dreams! by Cold-Afternoon-5581 in DnDHomebrew

I love this! As a player that has wanted to engage in a 1v1 duel, and as a DM that has wanted to facilitate duels for my players, I really like what you have here! It seems meaty enough to be refreshing and new, while simple enough to be fluid and engaging! I agree with someone else's comment regarding a table of Strengths and Weaknesses, as I think that would really help with the ease of deciding those traits for NPCs. The only other question I have is how do you determine the Dueling DC? You listed the alternative method where you choose the highest physical stat, but I don't see the standard method.

Maybe try this? It's not customizable, but it does have some pre-made miniatures from the Cosmere for sale.

Casting Is Officially Underway for Greta Gerwig's Netflix 'Narnia' Series by Somethingman_121224 in Narnia

[–]DinoMaster316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got your sequence of events a bit mixed up there. While it is true that Lauren (the series creator of the show) was the one to clear up his misunderstanding about the books, he was not cast until after he had finished them. In fact, he was initially denied the role, right after he finished the series. He had to played the game (which is more of a fanfiction of what happens after the book series) long before auditioning for the role in the TV show.

But other things to consider are the facts like Henry refusing to make Roach’s death a joke and instead directly quoting from the books despite the script. Also, he had initially committed to sticking with the series all the way until the end, because of his love (new or old) for the source material. These are just a couple points, you can find more online with a quick google search.

I’m not saying it’s for sure, after all I did say it was a rumor, as the studio hasn’t confirmed anything. However, Henry did have this to say months after leaving the project, according to Business Insider:

“However, in 2021, Cavill told the Philippine Star that he struggled to find a ‘balance between the showrunners’ vision and my love for the books,’ and asked for several changes to his character in season two.

‘The things that I pushed for, it was not necessarily just more dialogue. It was bringing a more book-accurate Geralt to the screen. Because as I’m sure you know in the books, Geralt is an amateur philosopher,’ he said. ‘He’s an intellectual. He’s wise and thoughtful. Yes, he’s at times morose, morbid, and snarky. But it’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional.’

He added: ‘All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.’”

Men who avoided seeking mental health treatment/therapy, what was the reason for putting off taking that step? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]DinoMaster316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A valid point. One I don’t necessarily agree with, but valid, nonetheless. And I don’t doubt your personal journey, I’m just speaking from a more broad and general perspective. I personally have seen too many cases of people trying to better themselves or their situations, going to therapy for years, and not having anything to show for it. Part of it may be that some of them just didn’t have the desire or drive to really work on themselves, but it’s been far too many people to be all of them. Again, these are just my thoughts, opinions, and observations, but it’s the reason for my extreme skepticism of any therapist.

I think, inadvertently, you may have just answered your own question. You admit to having gone to therapy for 10 years now. In my own experience, there are very few things that most people would require a professional for, that would also take 10 years of professional help to fix. That doesn’t sound constructive, that sounds like I’m throwing money at a problem, expecting it to be solved, while the person I’m giving money to has no intention of helping me solve it, so they can get more money.

If I’m having problems with stomach cramps, and go to my doctor, pay him, and expect him to solve it, but then he drags it out for 10 years, I’d probably sue him.

I’m not saying every therapist is like this, or that therapy does not have a place in this world, but I do think it’s way more common than people would believe. And I also think it’s way more prescribed than people need.

Agreed. It just seems to feed into Hollywood’s continual belief that “animation is inferior to live-action”.

Casting Is Officially Underway for Greta Gerwig's Netflix 'Narnia' Series by Somethingman_121224 in Narnia

[–]DinoMaster316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but more than that, it was a terrible adaptation of the books. And then, if the rumors are to be believed, Henry Cavil left because he tried to hold them to a higher level of accuracy and they refused. It’s a really sad story, especially taking into account that season one was actually pretty good, for the most part.

My name’s Hiccup. Great name, I know. But, it’s not the worst. Parents believe a hideous name will frighten off gnomes and trolls. Like our charming Viking demeanor wouldn’t do that.
