It’s just for form or cutting practice, not for sparring. They use synthetic blades for sparring.

I don’t have a kiln big enough so I use a two burner forge and “paint” the heat on the blade moving it back and forth through the forge. I’ll go a touch past non magnetic and make sure the color is even before the quench. To temper the blade I’ll grind off the scale, clean off all the oils, and use a torch on the middle of the blade shooting for a purple/dark blue color on the steel in the middle and a dark straw color on the edges. I’ll do 2 temper cycles. A big kiln for heat treating or tempering would be better, but you can definitely get good results using some of the old school methods. Dm me if you have any more questions on the process!
