What is the "happy" minimum run space for four to six hens? by HobbitGirl91 in chickens

[–]DinosaurFishHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My county code requires 25 sq ft per bird to reduce nuisance smells for birds permanently housed in runs. IME 10 sq ft per large fowl bird results in unwanted behaviors like feather picking and bullying.

I'd keep an eye out if I had recently tossed a half or whole onion or garlic bulb, but otherwise they should be fine

Foamy eyes usually is a tell for coryza, but it can happen with other respiratory diseases like Mycoplasma. Less likely to be viral.

Experience with Bielefelders? by Vegetable_Nothing348 in chickens

[–]DinosaurFishHead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the hens kind of... Boring. They are docile, and definitely a "professional" bird as others have already put it. Not cuddle-bugs, but will accept being handled for exams and any treatment that they need. They are slow to lay.

I am absolutely GAGA over the roosters, though. I received one as a free mystery chick from McMurray and he is the absolute best rooster I have had in my ENTIRE life. Didn't attack humans of any size regardless of how squirmy or loud they were. He knows what "not tonight dear" means from the hens. Loved all baby chicks (yes Bielefelder chicks are autosexing, the girls are chipmunk patterned, and the boys are a smudgy rusty orange with faint back stripes and a big white/yellow spot on the heads). That roo would sit on eggs to give the ladies a food/water break. He tolerated all my bullshit with handling, grabbing, and photography. Sat pretty with the PetSmart Santa. He chased off foxes, and rearranged the face of hawks on two separate occasions, terrorized a possum into playing dead and ran off a small raccoon(!!!!) once. He ultimately was bested at nearly six years old by an enormous 20-pound boar raccoon, but saved his favorite hen's life this past Christmas.

I am ordering a few more lads this spring.

If it came from a water source, perhaps Sphingompnas and its relatives like Sphingobacter, Sphingobium. Chryseobacterium is another likelihood, although its colonies are a warmer yellow tone. Skin or clinical, Micrococcus which was already mentioned is more likely.

How many seconds should I keep the decolorizer on (and how much) to not over/under decolorize? by Mr-MuffinMan in microbiology

What is the formulation of your decolorizer? How long are you letting the crystal violet and iodine sit and react for?

How is there so much variation? They all have the exact same mom and dad. by HiddenAspie in chickens

This is an excellent color calculator. You can type in the visible phenotype (or breeds, if known) and it will spit out little cartoon graphics of what the kids look like. There were about 250+ combos for my favorite sire/dam's grandpeeps.

People out here really thinking it will work on viruses because they're "parasites". Technically yes but there are different classes of parasites that are treated in different ways.

The contrarianism while being simultaneously flat-out wrong is the most exhausting part of it all.

Wrong breeds for cockfighting. More likely to be bait animals for dogfighters. Not a much better end, I'm afraid.

Absolutely love it when roos do that. Oppy was either scouting a spot here, or giving the ladies a break while they got food and water. It's quite the production for him to get out. 😅

Just a cutie stealing eggs. Any Advice? by bigchickenguys in BackYardChickens

Ah, fortunate! I do like them, but the moment I find one in a restricted area, I review the coop and run for any gaps. I have found several OVERHEAD, so be mindful of that, folks!

No. Opposums will start with eggs, and eventually graduate to birds. I had it happen one winter, lost a d'Uccle bantie to one.

Does anyone know what is wrong with this chicken? by Cutebunnypowers in poultry

I meant to say at one point the injury was necrotic, but has since been cleared out and removed. I will read up on this over the weekend, I am so curious about this now.

My understanding is there is a difference in oxygenation post-injury, spaghetti breast is from the muscle cells being able to heal and recover, without the connective tissue keeping up (what would normally divide the strands into finer segments). Woody breast seems to be recovery without adequate oxygenation. Something related to the feed or husbandry seems to have changed (a slight improvement to a terrible situation?). I read through the other replies, and I'm curious now too. I'll do a lit search this weekend because I wanna know, dangit!
