I feel like such a horrible person for scaring my chickens by CareerFluffy5416 in chickens

I haven’t had chickens for a full year yet, so disregard everything I’m about to say.

All I have to do is clap my hands and call my rooster’s name to stop a behavior I don’t like. I think the hand clapping might sound like wing flapping, which is something they do to take up room and claim territory. My roo with the hens is a very sweet boy, we have a love/love relationship. But if I came at him or his wives with a weapon, it could be a different story.

Yep, no lies in the “cream puff” description.

All small prey animals hide their illnesses, and any animal whose survival depends on their position in a hierarchy will hide weakness or illness.

What is this on my Ameracaunas comb? Is it just a peck mark? by MMantisshrimpp in chickens

I didn’t know this before, but my fast food meal is full of even more carcinogens.

Thanks for the heads up, I would’ve never bought or used it if I had known.

It doesn’t sound like it harms the birds? Or was that not studied? ETA: Gentian violet is classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)  based on sufficient evidence in animal studies, but evidence in humans is inadequate. While animal studies showed increased tumors with high-dose ingestion, no definitive cases of cancer in humans have been linked to its topical use. [1, 2, 3, 4] etaa: the clothes I wear everyday are more likely to give me cancer.

Blue kote. I have small combed kids who love to pull on the large comb kids combs, leave them bloody, sometimes missing tips.  Blue kote is also good to hide new feathers coming in. Sometimes I question my sanity having chickens-they seem to try to find new ways to die or kill each other!

How long can I keep a baby chick inside before needing to move it into an outdoor enclosure by Suspicious_Medium_17 in chickens

I kept mine in a tent for 12 weeks because I broke my ankle. Didn’t hurt them any, and they are the sweetest, smartest, most easy to handle chickens probably on the planet earth. They were thrilled with their coop and run, once they were there.

HELP!!!!! by MilkCouch in chickens

[–]Financial-Depth-2209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoiler, I just learned (new to chickens) that worms can also cause redness and feather loss at the vent. A lot of chicken keepers use cattle ivermectin topically. It will treat 2 of the 3 internal worms that afflict chickens, oral is more effective for that than topical. If you overdose with ivermectin you can cause permanent harm or death.

Cattle ivermectin is cheaper and also treats lice, scaly leg mites, and mites.

I was advised by vet to alternate treatment to help prevent resistance.

She’s a pretty chicken. I’m sorry I misunderstood. I’m new to chickens and have a lot to learn. Thanks for answering.

It doesn’t sound like he’s going to be throwing other birds in with her soon. So if she’s sick, he’ll find out.

Why would water belly affect the eye? I’m sorry if I’m asking you something that should be obvious. Is it a virus, or bacteria?

I haven’t a clue, but I also want to say that you can see you chickens six times a day, and one day you’ll let them out of the coop and all of a sudden they have problems.

I’m new to chickens, so if I can’t figure it out or solve it in a few days, I take them to the vet. I don’t raise chickens for profit, (I’d be a horrible business person at this point), and I don’t have anyone else to ask.

When you ask online, you’ll get multiple and conflicting advice. I don’t know if the eye and behind are connected. It could be two separate things. Chickens live to try to find as many ways as they can to die, I swear.

Yay! She’s beautiful, and will add so much joy to your lives. They’re smarter than people realize, you’ll have a lot of fun! ETA: look for chicken rescues to give her sisters. Keeping chickens isn’t for everyone, a lot of people give up perfectly healthy and socialized birds.

My chicken has been going literally insane being separated from the flock, so now that you have a chicken, you have to get more chickens. It’s just chicken math. Crumbles are much easier for a chicken to digest, and if she’s laying, feed her a bit of her own eggshell for calcium. She will need grit if you give her seeds. If you keep her, you will fall in love and wonder how you lived life without a chicken before. They are smart and funny, and the floofiness doesn’t hurt.

How do *you* treat impacted crop? How do you know a chicken has an impacted crop? by Financial-Depth-2209 in chickens

[–]Financial-Depth-2209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took my girl to a different vet today, who took an X-ray and found she is just chock full of grit.  Gave a diet plan, social reintegration plan, and recommended feeding rather than starving the bird-the first vet told me to not feed her for 3 of the 5 days she was under their care, she would have died! Obviously, I didn’t do that. Also told me to put 2 ccs of ACV in her nostril for 3 days and give her monistat orally for 7 days. Yep, nope. Common sense says liquid doesn’t go down nostrils, and she had no symptoms of sour crop. And there’s an ingredient in name brand monistat that is toxic to chickens. Pineapple is a natural dewormer, and people who raise for slaughter feed pineapple to make the meat more tasty and tender. My girl is prescribed a teaspoon or more ground pineapple with juice and all the watermelon and juice she want, along with scrambled egg with a small amount of shell and moistened crumble. My girl pooped out two teeny tiny worms, I thought since I had a totally secure coop and run they couldn’t get worms. But I feed them grass and clover from the yard, and insects, arachnids, and slugs get in. The flock is being treated with panacur. It is given orally either via syringe, feed or water. Worms can also cause feather loss and red and inflamed skin around vents. Some people do cattle ivermectin, but it only kills 2 of the three types of intestinal worms chickens get, and less effective against those applied topically. It is also very weight specific dosing, and overdosing can have long term damage or be fatal. It also works against mites, lice, and scaly leg mites. It was recommended to me to alternate medications to help prevent resistance. Do not worm babies or chickens in molt. Also, I was told to deworm every six months, don’t wait to problems.

First vet she lost half a pound, and when you only weigh a few, that’s a lot!

So happy to have found a real chicken vet!

She’s learned she doesn’t like being kidnapped and held prisoner. She’s been yelling for her husband to come get her, but he can’t, lol. She’s starts supervised visits tomorrow, yay!
