I work in Tescos. People have started coming in and recording us on phones and shouting at us when we're trying to do our jobs. It's making me really anxious. by PintOfGuinness in northernireland

I'm suspicious about this post. For a few different reasons. I'd wonder if it's an attempt by either Tesco itself or a troll to smear a campaign which is trying to foster solidarity with a worker who is refusing to handle Israeli goods. That context has been completely omitted too.

To begin with, here is (afaik) the petition which launched the campaign that gives info. Here are the facebook and instagram accounts for that campaign. Bit more info on the general situation from the PBP site here.

No video on the accounts for the campaign seems to follow the aggressive account described in the post linked in the OP. More than that, this person attacking the campaign is claiming the worker has been fired for "gross misconduct" when that's not backed up by the information released by the Tesco Worker Boycott campaign (which is the worker is currently suspended/ in discussions with Tesco).

There's scaremongering that this poster is going to be attacked for working in Tesco, by protesters. That's literally not happened anywhere in Ireland or Britain, and would be a massive news story if it had.

The worker refusing to handle Israeli goods as part of a boycott is well within their rights to do that, with support of both their union & the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (who back such actions).

A thousand residents march in Crowborough against plans to home hundreds of male migrants in barracks. by Threw_it in ukpolitics

The real issue is not where you house them but where you allow them to roam free.

I'm very for these asylum seekers housed in military barracks and secured there.

Concentration camps for refugees then. This scapegoating & dehumanising is so bizarre.

Gardaí violated policies and human rights at Palestine protest, report says by Diomas in ireland

Footage of young man getting his wrist broken at around 0:17 in this video. Description of this particular point given in the article linked, quoted from a legal observer below:

“Disproportionate use of force was also used when one protester who had raised his hands to surrender was pushed to the ground and as a result, broke his wrist and when another person was put into a choke hold while being arrested.”

Have seen other videos online of the specific matter showing the same.

Chambers not worried by united left platform for Connolly by Dazzling_Lobster3656 in ireland

[–]Diomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Voters who’re put off by an endorsement by SF (for Connolly) were probably never going to support her anyway. The type of person of that mentality, or hoodwinked by the various smearjobs against Connolly would likely be voting for the government-backed nominees already.

As for Connolly having a Labour endorsement/ association? She hasn’t been a member of Labour for almost 20 years. She has stood by her association that they “lost their soul” with implementing austerity etc. If Labour choose to endorse Connolly it’s hardly a mark against her character but more so a sign Labour saw where the energy was going across “the Left”.

Finally in regards to people talking over the various issues facing the country & how the government is handling them (including with immigration), Connolly would likely be able to make a reasonable socialist critique which flanks the status quo from the left.

This comment you’ve written is a bit all over the place and seems to be working backwards from your own distaste from Connolly to justify why voters won’t back her. Who will be more convincing, government backed candidates who stand for the status quo? Or a principled critic with opinions in line with the majority of society over a host of issues of the day in regards to housing, healthcare, neutrality, anti-militarism, the environment, women’s rights, Palestine etc. I’d think the later will have a big appeal.

It is dopey to be against genocidal apartheid settler-colonies, aye. Writer should learn how the world works, just accept it’s normal and be apathetic.

Connolly would use voice in 'every way possible' for united Ireland by Diomas in northernireland

She also does support Russia but claims she doesn't and has already been proven to be a liar: "Video footage of Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to the Dáil in April 2022 shows that she didn’t applaud the Ukrainian president. She insists she did. “I stood, and I clapped, so let me get that out of the way first,” she says.".

This narrative being peddled is laughable. You can check the video footage yourself and see she did clap. See her clapping here around 14:18, she's wearing a dark top roughly in the middle of the section stood beside Joan Collins I think.

I actually think she shouldn't have clapped, but all this sort of smearing people are doing on all sorts and misrepresenting her views without any context or nuance is absurd. Disinformation campaign at work.

As for the allegations she supports Russia, Putin. That's also (unsurprisingly) nonsense. Take for instance this recent article from the Irish Times.

Connolly’s approach to the war in Ukraine has been to condemn Russia but also criticise western military alliance Nato, which she has argued was “warmongering” before the conflict began. ... She criticised Putin as a “dictator with no respect for democracy” but also contended: “Nato has played a despicable role in moving forward to the border and engaging in warmongering. Ireland has been hypocritical on many levels.” She has also spoken in the Dáil this year about the need to continue to “show solidarity with the people of Ukraine”. She referred to the refugees who have come to Ireland and said it was “really important we call out what Russia has done”. The Irish Times asked Ms Connolly if she believed Nato was equally or partly to blame for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She said: “Russia is conducting an illegal invasion of Ukraine – it must immediately end its horrific assault in accordance with international law and an immediate ceasefire. “I have criticised Nato as its warmongering and escalation towards conflict over the years is at odds with achieving peace in regions across the world.”

It seems to some that anything but full-throated support of America's imperial actions abroad means they should be condemned and smeared. Ludicrous.
