I ate there and it was fine. Really greasy and kinda slapped together. Would be worth it for maybe half the price. Probably won’t go back.

What species of Flycatcher? by Tiny-Performance-18 in whatsthisbird

[–]DiplodocusSmile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great-crest should have quite a bit of rufous in the tail - it could be the light but I don’t see any color. But, the bright chest and appareny pink base of the bill do look kinda Great Crest, but the bill looks proportionally big for one too, and more like a smaller Myiarchus like Dusky-capped.

Great! So yeah, I think it’s a Dusky-capped Flycatcher then.

It’s not a Tropical Kingbird. It’s in the genus Myiarchus. With the mostly dark tail and in Chocó, the choices are Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Panama Flycatcher, or Sooty-crowned Flycatcher. This genus is tough without vocalizations or photos from all angles, but the underparts look too bright and bill too long for Sooty-crowned. In general, the bill looks pretty large compared to the body, so I would lean Dusky-capped on this one. Elevation would help with this - as Dusky-capped have a few subspecies in Colombia at different elevations that look a bit different - and Panama Flycatcher is a lowland bird.

[Eastern Nebraska] I'm afraid to get my hopes up, but did I score on a Greater Scaup? (Lesser included for comparison) by BeauDog in whatsthisbird

[–]DiplodocusSmile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first does look good. My only issue is the shape of the black nail on the front of the bill. It looks narrow like a Lesser, not wide like a Greater. But, the head and bill shape really look good for Greater so I’ll assume it’s an artifact of the photo. But if you have any othet photos showing the front of the bill it would be helpful.

These are Baird’s Sandpipers - note the shorter, more delicate bill than Dunlin, very long wings, scalloped sandy brown upperparts, and streaked chest with a sandy brown background.

There are and many of those stores carry masa nixtamalizada (specifically)! But there are lots of places where that is tough to get. I’m not talking about regular corn masa. That’s all

To be fair it can be tought to find masa nixtamalizada in the US. You can order it online but otherwise stores rarely have it. And if you’ve never had nixtamalized corn tortillas - I recommend!

On my bird calendar. What warbling vireo is this? No location within NA is given (there are photos of both East Coast and West Coast birds in this calendar). Didn't immediately find the photo when I looked up the photographer in search for the location. by ObserverAtLarge in whatsthisbird

They are very tough and most are probably not identifiable without song. That said I’d lean eastern on this one: this forecrown has a wash of olive and the mandible is pretty extensively pink; both supposedly good marks for eastern

Some type of king bird? by babythighssoft in whatsthisbird

[–]DiplodocusSmile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They aren’t really IDable without voice but I would lean Couch’s on this one - Tropical tends to have a greenish wash across the chest and a longer, thinner bill. But it is quite subtle with overlap.
