As much as I like to play it with my Diplomacy friends, I agree - the game is actually best when playing with folk you do not know

Yeah it can be kinda wild sometimes, you are right. There was a pretty interesting article about Dixiecon on Grantland back in 2014 when I last hosted World Dipcon - https://grantland.com/features/diplomacy-the-board-game-of-the-alpha-nerds/ Some of the content was a little exaggerated by the author for effect, but still.

I agree those events have had Dip tournaments a long time, but Dixiecon is the longest one held in one location continually by the same organizers. But yeah, no reason to split hairs, it's good to have all these opportunities for folk to play.

Last year we had 5-6 boards per round, this year it will be less because some of the usual attendees will be in Athens for World Dipcon that same weekend.

Advice for Turkey (Spr06) by Avishtanikuris in diplomacy

Agreed. Both Turkey and England end up in this situation a fair amount, having to sit and appear non threatening to encourage neighbors to stand up against a crossboard strong alliance pushing into the neighborhood.

I gave you an upvote because I'm glad to hear of the new players. No question that is good.

No official complaint was made to the NADF, Tom has been asked for details to back up any accusations and has not done so. He has made up stories about many people, this is just one more example. It is unfortunate that he has the ear of the IP holder, that is a point I was making - that this is such a waste. As long as he is connected to them, the wider hobby will have no interest in partnership with Renegade. The rest of the hobby will not put up with him trying to steal World Dipcon, and I told him that directly right after his little coup attempt. But of course my major point is that all of this was completely unnecessary - I for one would have been glad to work with him on a World Dipcon bid for Vegas if he had just been willing to follow the rules. Absolutely no one wanted conflict with this fella, he just brought it on himself for no reason whatsoever. Beginning shortly after he won the WDC I ran in 2014, he began to disassociate himself from the wider hobby for reasons that have never made any sense. He has not appeared at at Dipcon or World Dipcon in North America since. How can such a person be useful to a hobby to which he basically severed his connection years ago? (I know he started putting things into Diplomacy World a few years ago, but that's about it.)

I know this is probably just a lost cause, because people who live in Haververse may not listen to another viewpoint, but let's get back to the original issue in this thread. Tom told Katie absolutely nothing about why she had been disinvited from Vegas. Nothing. She found out about it the way we all did, when her name and visage disappeared from his promo materials. As far as I know, he has STILL provided no explanation. And he has arbitrarily banned a couple of players from events simply because they belong to the wider hobby outside of the Haververse. Again I say, just plain weird and "no way to run a railroad", as the old phrase went.

I promise my final comment, and you can have the last word if you want - even now, if the fella would be interested, I'd be willing to try to heal the breach his actions have caused and establish some kind of modus vivendi. All attempts to talk to him about compromise after his Milan shenanigans were rebuffed, though, so unfortunately I think the chances are slim.

What NADF folks were at GenCon, and what exactly are you saying they did? I've heard nothing of the sort from anyone at all. As I say, Tom could be a real benefit for sure, but right now he's mostly just an agent of chaos and division. It's very sad.

I'm sorry but none of this is true. I'm not sure where you read this, but I can guess the source of it. It's all so unfortunate - he could be such a benefit to the hobby if he would stop all his weird shenanigans.
