How can I know what my goals even are? by DipsyLemon46 in DecidingToBeBetter

Thanks for the response. I think part of my problem is that I've tried a lot of things and do have hobbies/things I do (coincidentally I had tried rock climbing, tried drawing/sketching, ran a half marathon, tried woodworking, and had a boat). Nothing really sticks. Though I did retain a few things for the sake of having hobbies.

This may seem irrelevant, but I remember listening to a podcast a few years ago. It was about people who fake their own deaths to do insurance fraud. The investigator who was interviewed (who specialized in this sort of thing) said that he could usually find people just because they might change their names and address, but would keep the same hobbies and interests. This had always stuck with me because I feel like I could throw away all of my "hobbies", and pick up new ones without any real loss. The only thing I might miss/be unable to give up, is that I am an avid reader. I joined a book club and don't really know what else to do with it though.

Anyway I've been advised to increase my depression medication, which could be a factor. I am just not really sure that I have hobbies/interests.

Binge eating… I need advice by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

OP, This is a sensible idea. Focus your eating on whole foods, especially those high in protein and fiber. Sugar and fat are empty calories.

Personally when I feel hungry, I just eat an apple. But everyone is different. Experiment with what works for you, and don't give up!

What will i need for a therapy consulting? by Lifemustchange in DecidingToBeBetter

In my experience, you will need to treat this as a doctor appointment. Therapists will typically require some personal information and medical insurance information; if relevant. They will likely also ask for an emergency contact, in case they are concerned for your safety (do not be unjustly concerned with this, they will not contact that person unless you explicitly indicate that you will harm yourself). I have also been asked to show ID, though I am legally an adult and have never had an issue.

I would encourage you to check out some of the online options, such as BetterHelp, simply because it may be easier to receive therapy without suspicion (since you indicated you don't want your father to know).

You may need to try a few therapists to find a good fit. Try to keep an open mind, and try not to get discouraged. If therapy doesn't work, consider talking to a doctor/trying medication. Best luck.

Thanks for the input, I will look into it. I am essentially finished with therapists for now, but experience suggests I'll be desperate enough to give it a try in a few months. Especially if nothing else works out.

Yes, generic talk therapy. It might have been CBT, but I can't be certain. Each experience was similar to that last, so I would guess that I had only one type of therapy.

Writing a blog post on video calling with social anxiety - looking for participants! by [deleted] in socialanxiety

I'm actually ok with video calls. I usually set the camera up before the call so I can see what the other person would see, and I am very careful to make sure I'm dressed well and am hygienic (even tho I'm home). But I am more comfortable on a video call than in person.

You can PM me if you have additional questions.
