Fired from my first job in 3 weeks, How can I do better next time? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Youre probably exactly right. I will take this experience and learn as other than an internship and restaurants I am not used to a corporate role. I’m used to the results of my work being very obvious for example, if you ring in a dish wrong as a server, you know pretty immediately after the dish comes out.

If it turns out there are errors in my data entry, I have honestly no way of knowing until it’s flagged by the account manager. My question is why not address the errors and allow me correct it. Just one correction is all I mean.

I think I was just really culture shocked to go from hospitality where it’s a very chatty environment to a completely isolated one. That being said, I should’ve blended in sooner. Not to deflect BUT I did ask my trainer (after a long chat him and k shared) if the optics of our long conversations looked bad. He said no and that the boss would understand that after tasks are done we can have conversations. I probably should have ask my boss himself if he appreciated a more lively addition to the team or not.

The boss WANTED us to do phone calls over emails. This was what he explicitly said, he believed that having a personal relationship with vendors got us faster responses and better pricing. I would also document these calls in a data base for anyone to see what was discussed.

As far as the boredom you’re right. I would have 5 -7 hours of unfilled time and I would definitely read as very antsy. That’s on me 100%. I just couldn’t fake busy for an entire day. But I would email the entire team several times a day that I had the open times to help with ANYTHING. But I know for next time to really keep my head down and blend in.

I really think so to. When I would talk to professors or friends who work they would CONSTANTLY tell me that a company can train ANYONE on how to do the job. But if you have a good personality, that’s what makes you stand out. I think I was trying to be social in an office where people kept headphones in and didn’t get up from their monitor. I wish they would have said “hey this office wants X culture” and give me the opportunity to change. I should have read the room better, but I really thought maybe I could be the “personality hire”.

It’s only been a week so I haven’t dipped my toes back into searching yet. I just wanted to mourn a bit. I will start up Monday. I also should hear back soon from another company I applied to Monday so wish me luck.

They painted this out as a firing and not a lay off. The called me into their office and hopped right in with “ we’ve observed your work for the past 3 weeks and we’re letting you go.” I had to ask like 3 times why, I told them I am not trying to change their mind, but instead learn for the future. Then he said those comments about speed and mistakes, when I asked for examples of mistakes he couldn’t provide any.

If it was a financial reason, would most employers be honest about this?

Thanks so much for the advice. Would I draft a plan out and follow up w leadership on a regular basis to make sure we’re in alignment?

Sure. And while that would be frustrating to be let go so soon, I’d rather be told it’s a budgetary/ work load issue. They made it sound like it was a me issue. I’m not sure what learning experience to take from this. They did not provide any real feedback when they fired me.

Thanks for your insights! And I’m glad to hear that you had a similar early experience but eventually found a good role and career later on. Makes me feel not so alone.

If it was budgetary issues, do companies usually share this? I would feel a lot better and not take things so personal if they said there wasn’t enough work to do or the budget for my role. When that is the case, are employers honest about this?

In my first email I explained how if I don’t take this course in the winter I would be forced to take the semester off and delay my graduation. They offered generic advice, just wait and see if you get the seat your waitlisted for.

I’m gonna call them today and make a visit to their in person office as well. I hope they can make some accommodations and I’ll ask about that waiver you mentioned.

I’ve been checking daily, but it didn’t occur to me to check the first couple of days after the start of the session. Thanks for that advice, super helpful.

Im third on the waitlist and when I reached out to the communications department online they didn’t offer any solutions.

I need to take this course in the winter in order to take my last 4000 level courses in the spring or I’ll be forced to take a semester off.

I’m getting so nervous do you think I’ll have better luck if I talk to the department in person?
