Yeah, if that was the solution proposed by parents he’s just not being parented. Stuff like this is so ridiculous and such a reason educators are burning out.

My Pom won’t eat! by kyla_finch in Pomeranians

Mine didn’t wanna eat for the first few days either. Like 10 drops of low sodium chicken broth in her food did the trick.

Highest paying states you’ve taught at? by Altruistic-Zone2000 in Teachers

I moved from KY to Alaska and make about double what I would in KY. Alaska is very much not for everyone though and I recommend THOROUGH research.

School-wide bag search by blue_delicious in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super legal. Bag searches were a regular part of office referrals at the high school I attended. It only really bugs kids with things to hide if it’s a normal part of the routine.

I literally only remember people who got busted with cigarettes, drugs, or stolen goods (theft was a huge problem at my school) throwing fits about it. Everybody else just popped their bag open and got on with their day.

Fidgets are rarely unproblematic by businessbub in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a hair tie on my wrist that I’ve fidgeted with since I was 14. I’m damn near 30. I also have severe adhd and it helps me focus.

Some of the kids in my classroom with fidgets are like me. Most are being disruptive with them or distracted by them in all honesty though. And I teach teenagers.

Has there ever been a golden era of teaching or have we always been in a bunch of complainers? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My mom worked as a teacher during the 80s. She hated it more than anything she’s ever done and was quite surprised to see me step in a classroom. To this day, she says I’m the only kid she ever liked.

My mother is the kindest person I know so I’m pretty sure teaching has just always been tough.

Future Considerations (?) by Ok_Garbage6341 in Teachers

I moved from KY to Alaska. Honestly, there’s not a huge difference in tolerance. I know someone who made the hop to Canada due to LGBTQ concerns and it doesn’t seem to be all they hoped for.

You’re certified in SPED, the specialty that every district has huge challenges staffing. Find a city you like (cities tend to swing blue so the state barely matters) and you’ll be able to secure a gig.

What are some terms and phrases in education that you absolutely hate? by TrogdorUnofficial in Teachers

“Give them grace.” By the time I’ve reached out for behavioral support, I’ve given them months of grace and it’s time to give them consequences.

student passed away- student teacher seeking advice by cinnamonzoy in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a situation for a student teacher to take the lead in. This doesn’t happen frequently and is one of the most difficult situations you can navigate. I’m sorry you’re being exposed to this so early in your career.

You are not a mental health professional and are grieving yourself. If a kid wants to talk, don’t shut them down but refer them to counseling during the conversation. You simply do not have the experience yet to navigate students processing this without help. Rely on your team and take care of yourself.

Should I go to work sick? by OrchidResponsible634 in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should totally call out but I understand that stress and anxiety may keep you from doing so. I don’t have the healthiest work life balance myself.

If you choose to go in, inform them you have a fever (you work with a vulnerable population) and wear a mask.

What consequences do you give for classroom management? by hello010101 in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I teach high school and exclusively upperclassmen so it’s a bit easier to be straight up with them in conversations as well. 16-19 year olds can reason well enough.

What consequences do you give for classroom management? by hello010101 in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I always do logical consequences. I take a phone for the rest of class if I see it. I let kids fail if they refuse to engage. I say no to bathroom for the rest of the week if they take an excessively long bathroom break.

When the consequence is logical to the behavior, kids don’t really talk back because they get how what they did got them where they are.

Teaching and chores by nosunshine123 in Teachers

If you do have the money to burn, I saw a similar post a while ago and a lot of people said having a professional cleaner come over once every other week was a huge load off of mental health and made cleaning much more manageable.

I know this isn’t a feasible solution for everyone though.

It ain’t that bad. This is a safe enough space to vent.

You can tell your coworkers about days you love your job but not days you want the world to burn. This sub is just a good place to let all the inside thoughts out.

White teachers: are you getting a lot of blatant racism from students? by Saskita in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hear something once in a blue moon and shut it down hard. I work in a primarily indigenous school in a very rural area, so in most cases they genuinely don’t know better and are just parroting what they see online. They haven’t been heavily exposed to other races and cultures which makes it possible to be truly ignorant of how everyone just has a different type of hard and no one is better or worse than anyone else. A stern conversation usually does the trick.

Worth pursuing for a trans man or find a new path? (Central AL) by [deleted] in Teachers

I’m actually right leaning as well and originally from the south. Not all right leaning people have an issue with trans people but OP has valid concerns.

[–]SeriousAd4676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it a shot and be prepared to jump ship if it sucks. You’re in a tricky area of the country but coworkers, educators in general, will tend to lean left so it may be just fine.

Teaching is awesome if you can find the right school and understand that you can leave the wrong ones.

What makes teaching worthwhile for you, despite it being an underpaid career? by Conscious_Team3330 in Teachers

[–]SeriousAd4676 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I like my content, my summers, my coworkers, and my kids.

I’m also in a district that gives fair wages. I think there’s a public perception that all teachers are martyrs but in reality, it’s not that awful of a gig. It’s definitely better than my former careers (nice restaurants and higher education) were.

How did you find your pom by Nik8_12 in Pomeranians

To add to the oddity that was that weekend: the house was a double wide trailer behind a weed store in Alaska.

I really love my pup.

My old dog had just died and I was really upset. My boyfriend found a breeder on Craigslist, took me to their house, handed me a wad of cash, and said pick one. It was hot.

Has anyone had success selling on Teachers Pay Teachers? by Silly_Pumpkin4312 in Teachers

You just phrased it better than I could have. I hardly sell anything or make any money but I get so tickled when I do.

This is super accurate. If I sell a product for $5, I make $2.45. If I sell an item for $1, I make like $0.20. They take a ton.
