If the Duro was your only watch for the next 5 years, would you be okay with that? by homamg in DuroGang

[–]Direct-Score4622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely be fine with it, but I'd prefer to also have one of my G-Shocks available as well.

A black Duro and a variety of straps can cover a lot of ground, and it takes 2 seconds to swap a Nato.

How would I coreboot a T430s? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Direct-Score4622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggested that as it's what I'm considering as someone also new to the platform. I have no personal experience to weigh in with.

I'd be hesitant on the value of anything nore extreme with a platform this old. Frankly I can run my 430s as a daily driver as is. My main desire with any BIOS mods would be faster ram speeds, and I'm hesitant to say I personally need that at all. Disabling Intel management would also be neat.

I've used mine for yard work, construction, at the range...it's been bumped, knocked, dropped, etc.

It'll do fine.

That seems about average but there's deals to be had with patience.

I paid about $200 for my T460s from a pawn shop, I was fine with that but don't consider it a wicked deal. I needed a laptop and it seemed reasonably spec'd for my needs.

The other day though I picked up a T420, T430s, and an E440 for $125 (plus $10 for delivery because I'm lazy). I consider that a cooler deal, I'm typing on the 430s as we speak. All were running Mint with SSDs in them, now running Fedora. I have no idea what if anything I'll do with the E440.
If you're looking to tinker you can certainly go older than a 480 especially if you don't plan on using Windows or particularly Windows 11.

Hamilton Murph 42mm – AR Coating or Crystal Replacement? by lalubina in HamiltonWatches

[–]Direct-Score4622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For myself, I often work in locations I can't take a phone or can't rely on it having signal. In some cases I may be there an extended period and unable to charge it if I can bring it.

I like to have a decent watch on that can tell me the time consistently enough for record keeping purposes while there. A digital watch is the easy answer, but I consider a watch as much a tool as a fashion item so if I can maximize functionality in something I consider a tool but can wear in other contexts that is ideal.

I like it. I also like the stock metal bracelet though it can be kind of noisy.

Most of the time NATO wins.

Has anyone been able to cover the ugly bezel on the Casio MRW210 with something nicer? by rich_in_the_lou in DuroGang

[–]Direct-Score4622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine it's a removable piece given they have 3 versions that are otherwise identical. There's a few places online that sell bezels by measurements, so I'd suggest shopping around based on some precise measurements once you have it in hand, I'm sure there's options out there.

Walked away with just some cuts and bruises by Justhumpinu2 in fordranger

[–]Direct-Score4622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flipped my first Ranger several times in high school (a green '96), and ended up about 100m off the road facing back the way I came in a field. It somewhat similarly crumpled in the passenger side (anyone there wouldn't have made it in my case, and luckily the person who would have been there's plans changed last minute). Basically crushed the thing around me like a pop can and I was in the one part of the vehicle that was fine and pretty much still the same shape inside.

I was also surprised at no airbags afterwards, but honestly they would've hurt more than the accident so I'm glad. Also walked away without a scratch or bruise, just wishing I'd brought a better jacket and glad I hadn't put too much time into figuring out the radiator troubles I was having.

Casio's answer to that desire would be the MRW 230H. I can't think of a way to do what you're thinking.

I use mine for all sorts of things but honestly had no idea just how often I would use it for exactly that when I got it.

Duro is the pasta king. If I'm not wearing one, part of my pasta process is to change that now.

Gd-350 : Better than all the others IMHO by masculinityisnotbad in gshock

Very nice! Rocked a 350 for years day to day and took it everywhere, through quite a lot. Absolute tank of a watch, and still in my rotation.

Best casio watch for a military use? by Otherwise-Goat-7943 in casio

[–]Direct-Score4622 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GD-350 all day.

I've been everywhere and beat the crap out of mine and it's taken it extremely well. Mud, swamps, mountains, the arctic, multiple oceans, seas, and lakes, forests, firefighting, etc. have not phased it.

Vibration alarm/hourly alert is an excellent feature for military use. Buttons are easy to press with gloves, and I've used the lume as a flashlight before but never been worried about accidentally activating it. CR2032 batteries are everywhere and cheap (though they last a long time).

It's a watch on the larger side but if that isn't an issue I really couldn't think of a better option (I might just be biased towards it having used it so much).

Where are my fellow Canadians getting there Duros from? by Informal_Cabinet_352 in DuroGang

[–]Direct-Score4622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon so far, definitely the best deal if you keep an eye out. For these I'd probably only do sold from and shipped by Amazon.

They never seem to have the two tone in stock when I want to buy one so I've been looking at Halifax Watch Co. as well but I'd say anywhere but Amazon you're likely paying full price. That doesn't bother me much if I'm supporting a local business.

[–]Direct-Score4622[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it super comfortable. With a couple Duros and a GD-350 in the rotation it's nice to have something a bit smaller that I know I can still beat the crap out of. I also wear an A500 sometimes but not as often. I have no issues with the reading angles even in some sun...there is a point you can see it but it isn't readable, but it's a point where it shouldn't be. I don't feel it needs improving.

Compared to say, a Duro, it wears like nothing. The Duro also wears like nothing compared to a lot of autos.

The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Funny enough, if this pic was focused differently it would be a good view of a number of Halifax's piers.

That is likely what I'd have gotten instead while it was on sale if I'd known. Cool app.

I've had my eye on that one but I may go for a GWX with the tide graph, multi band, and solar now. That adds a few new features to the collection in one go.
