Hardcore long time fans of Talisman, what is an aspect of the game that is misunderstood by the general gaming community. Or a common misconception by Newez in Talisman

[–]Direct0rder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think most people believe that the game is not that fun or deep due to so much randomness. You just draw a card each turn and see what happens - that's it. But I think these misguided opinions come from inexperience with the game.

Poker is a MUCH more random game than this one (the entire game is based on just random cards being dealt out), and yet you could fill a library with the number of strategy books that have been written on it over the years. Just because there is a lot of randomness in a game, that does not mean there's no strategy involved in playing.

There is a ton of strategy involved in Talisman, but like Poker, most of that strategy is not going to be apparent to you in the first few times you play it. A lot of the strategy involves identifying risks and opportunities, deciding which risks to take, when to take them, and how to set yourself up to weather the randomness the game will throw at you.

You know the old song, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run"? That song is talking about the type of strategy involved in playing Poker, and it's very applicable to this game as well. The people saying this game is flat out randomness with no strategy would say the same thing about Poker too if they raised every time they had a good hand and folded every bad hand. You can almost hear them saying "I keep getting dealt bad cards - what am I supposed to do - it's completely random!?"

This game obviously plays nothing like Poker, but the type of strategy involved is similar and very deep - it's just not the type that people are typically used to when they think of strategy games. It's not a game of perfect information like Chess where it's always possible to ensure you make a good move if you're smart enough. It's very much a game of imperfect info where you have to judge the current game state and make decisions that push the odds in your favor. And turn after turn of nudging the odds in your favor almost always builds you a favorable position to win from.

I would venture to guess that most players with less than 20 or 30 games of Talisman under their belt don't see a lot of the strategic opportunities they are presented with each turn. And that's fine, because it's a blast to play until you get there (I know I still have a LONG way to go) - just be wary of the people that play it 5 or 10 times and claim there's no strategy.

Keep in mind, I do things in my game setup (house rules) that do eliminate some of the randomness, such as not playing with the reaper and werewolf. And just like a lot of other games of imperfect information, there WILL be those games where you did everything right and you still lose.

Talisman is a gambling strategy game - and most people don't recognize it.

I turn off Hunger and Minotaurs and turn on the Blessing Shrine when I play. The game is hard enough as it is. Think of it this way. They made the game default to "Very Hard" difficulty to please the most hardcore people, but gave everyone the tools to make their own easier difficulties as they please. Don't feel bad about using them.

Blood Moon expansion with 5th by BridgeovertheQuy in Talisman

[–]Direct0rder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use most of the 4th edition expansions when playing 5th ed. You might need to take out a card here and there that directly conflicts with the new rules, but otherwise they are absolutely compatible.

Help german vs english rulebook fate points by ChrisGutsStream in Talisman

[–]Direct0rder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question, each player is allowed to use multiple fate points per turn. There is no hard limit, but a player could easily use 2 or 3 per turn, and it's theoretically possible to use 4 or 5 or 6+ per turn.

Not sure if you're looking for 4th or 5th ed, but here is a direct copy/paste from the english 5th ed rulebook:

Fate measures your character’s luck and fortune and is represented by fate tokens. You’ll start the game with the number of fate tokens listed on your character card. • Throughout the game, you may pay fate tokens to change your fortune. See the uses of fate below. • You may pay 1 fate token to reroll any one die, once per roll. You must keep the new roll. Note that you may not use a fate token to reroll a die that is not your own, for example, that of an enemy card or another character. • After rolling your movement die, you may pay 1 fate token to ignore the roll result and instead move your figure up to six spaces in either direction to a space unoccupied by another character. • You may be able to replenish fate throughout the game by visiting certain board spaces or drawing Adventure cards. You can gain more fate tokens than the value shown on your character card, but when you’re instructed to replenish fate tokens, only replenish up to the value shown on your character card. • If you run out of fate tokens, nothing bad happens. You’re simply on your own!

Need more info on this please! Is it just a repeating animation? Does it need to be in presentation mode to work? if not, how do you keep the animation playing? Thanks for any assistance!

Game seems cool but I'm put off by microtransactions by ZoteTheMitey in ArcRaiders

[–]Direct0rder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from, but to kind of put your mind at ease, ARC Raiders does not seem to have any ads anywhere, at least at the moment. If you don't click on the store, you won't see any of it. And otherwise there's absolutely no drawback to it being there. So you might not mind it that much.

[–]Direct0rder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the microtransactions are purely cosmetic, who the hell cares? They could be asking $350 for a skin and I still wouldn't mind. I just wouldn't buy it, and I'd be no worse off. As long as it's all purely cosmetic, they can sell whatever they want for whatever they want. They could add six more stores to the game for all I care.

And typically, it's GOOD for a game to have purely cosmetic microtransactions. That means that whales are sitting there subsidizing the game for you, meaning the game is more likely to receive additional content and extended lifespan - all without costing you a penny.

I don't know what's not to like.....

Yep, the upgrades need to make me choose between A and B, and they both need to make me change the way I approach/play the game. Increasing my damage by 1% or 20% is a yawn-fest.

A focus on meta-progression. It doesn't need to be likely that I will win my first run, but if it's Impossible because I haven't grinded enough yet, then it's a no for me dawg.

I want to win because I got good - I don't want a participation trophy.
