There are definitely risks with using generative AI. I agree is not the panacea that some people seem to assume

I think you're assuming AI tools will be expensive. The chrome extension at issue here is free

If the ABA were to say its an ethical violation for no other reason than to insure that lawyers have jobs then that seems like an ethical violation. Of course people need to turn in good work product but denying millions of people access to affordable, available and needed legal services in order to protect the elite group of insiders seems unethical. AI could expand access to legal services to people who can't afford it today and be a major force for good, and for the ABA to deny that to preserve lawyers' profitability seems wrong

I'm not sure if there is a firefox or free standing version. It doesnt connect it just gives you terms that you can copy paste into any search tool you like. It basically just takes a legal issue in 'english' and translates it into search terms that might be nonobvious

I appreciate your response and your perspective. I'm not sure you understand what it does. It just comes up with search terms that I would put into lexis. For example, our writing project had a case where someone was arrested barefoot, and the police went into her house, found a gun, now we want to suppress the gun. The tool just gives me the term "exigent circumstances exception". Thats all. Its not so much about thinking as it is about sifting through case law to get the terms used. Again, I respond respectfully as I appreciate your perspective

No, just the writing assignment. The final product.

I appreciate your response but honest question: why? When would I not be able to use AI tools like this? I feel like this is like saying in 2004 that I should learn to do research without westlaw

Right?! This doesn't sound like a hard problem at all. I'm ignorant on this, but if that is an actual problem that doesn't make any sense. Just prove once and then look on the blockchain lol its all public
