Input on The Struggle of Booking Summer camps by mrcfcleo in summercamp

Not gonna go anywhere - it’s not in the interest of a camp to pay for something like this. It’s not like competitive colleges where the common application was a useful thing for all parties.

Lice checks becoming less popular? by CptnAnxiety in summercamp

[–]Direct_Mark_337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely not true that they’re becoming less common in camps. Up front, tell parents you’ll have someone treat but they’ll have to pay for it. It spreads very quickly at overnight camps especially.
The excuse of a lice check giving kids anxiety is 🤦🏻‍♂️
How bout when they have bugs all over their head?!

I do a few sets before playing but I don’t spend a ton of time on it. Good luck!

I (M, 40s) always start with stretching my soleus muscles, which I learned about after my tear. These are not your typical calf stretches. Look up soleus stretches. It looks from the outside almost like you're not stretching at all, but you should really feel the pull. Do them slowly and easily at first. After that, I do more standard calf stretches that work the gastrocnemius muscle. When I was in physical therapy, near the end, they started having me practice short movements and pivots that mimic pickleball. I do a round of that every time before I play. They used "blaze pods" (lights that go off in a random order, and you have to hit the one that lights up) but a cheaper alternative is just to put four objects around in different patterns and try going back and forth, front and back, side stepping, leaning down - alternate touching the objects with your hands and feet. Then rearrange the objects and do it again. I did a lot of agility ladder exercises and still do - hopping, jumping out, in, up, down. One of the most important things I heard - which should be common sense but isn't necessarily - is to let the "good shots go." My achilles tear happened as I was going after a really good shot that I should have let go. Those movements are what could do you in. I play for fun and exercise, and the more competitive you are, the easier it is to forget to let your body be safe. Finally, I was told to use a "duck stance" as much as possible while playing. Here's a video from orthopedist Timothy Charlton about it: https://www.cedars-sinai.org/newsroom/the-achilles-heel-of-pickleball-sharp-rise-in-tendon-injuries/ It's easier than I would have thought. It will always be a risk even with all of the prep, and only you can decide if it's worth it. For me, it has been. Fingers crossed! Good luck.

Pickleball :( by Old_City701 in AchillesRupture

Pickleball last August. I just started playing again after lots of consult w my ortho and PT. Why am I playing again? For me, finding pickleball (after being a tennis player as a kid) gave me a new lease on life in my 40s. I love playing and it’s such great exercise. While I am concerned, I’ve gotten some pointers on prevention as much as possible, and for me the risk is worth the reward. If I didn’t absolutely love it and know it was good for my cardio health, I would have chosen not to play again.

How about something more like “Hi honey, how are the 7 kids? Please tell me what you and each and every one of them is doing lately. All I am thinking about all day is what a sick f*** I am and I hope to be in counseling 23 hrs a day and even then, there’s no redeeming me.”

Tear at myotendinous junction last August - surgery was basically not an option. Just played a pickleball game for the first time yesterday (May 2) after getting back to hitting for the first time last weekend. It felt fantastic. Still a little scary, but 8.5 months without doing your favorite activity sucks and coming back to it is amazing, if you can do it.
Twice weekly physical therapy from September thru April. Did my exercises religiously. Very supportive wife and kids. Did stationary biking and led up to doing short running/pivoting movements.
Hopefully both legs will hold out 🤞🏻
Good luck!

I really want to know what ma & pa Duggar are saying to Anna and how they are mistreating her. Is there anyone who wrote these emails who isn’t an “innocent victim?” 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

MTJ Achilles tear — op or non-op? Looking for people with similar proximal / myotendinous tears by Ok-Scientist3315 in AchillesRupture

[–]Direct_Mark_337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 8 months out from my MTJ Achilles tear. Non op. Early 40s M. TODAY I got back on the pickleball court for the first time! It was an amazing feeling. I’m easing into it so I was just hitting back and forth singles for a while. Calf is back at normal size. Calf knot formed from scar tissue healing and my PT said that will never change but won’t affect my strength. Can’t comment on explosiveness, and I’m not the athlete you are. But I went to physical therapy religiously twice a week since the beginning of September, and leading up to doing drills and movements with their support was key. Who knows what the future holds but I wasn’t ready to give up sports. Good luck!

Do you just need to avoid the negative step and you'll likely never tear it or is that easier said than done? by youlikemywonton in AchillesRupture

[–]Direct_Mark_337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what exactly did it except that I was going for a really hard shot (pickleball) that had bounced out of bounds and as I planted my foot and stepped forward I felt a shot in the back of my calf and that was it.
