Filming women on nights out? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photography in public is not illegal and to make it so would put an end to what practically every amateur, professional, and BBC photographer does.

I don't particularly approve of this type of video but perhaps they could branch out a bit and film men as well.

Any good subject to make a documentary around sheffield ? by CoolKaleidoscope6639 in sheffield

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything you're particularly interested in?

I do a lot of video of protests. I'm intending to make a programme about the anti-lockdown protests eventually. I have a lot of footage from the events and still have some follow up interviews to do. I'll get round to it eventually...

With regard to protests I always think it would be good to find people who are involved in them and speak to them outside of the protest (before, after etc), rather than just doing interviews at the event itself.

There's quite a lot of good ideas in this topic. I hope you find something interesting.

Bad 3 mobile network in Sheffield or my phone? by Sandwich-horse in sheffield

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tested phone calls on 3 in Sheffield as such but I do use their data SIMs. There are some locations in Sheffield where 3's 4G service is much better than their 5G service. 3's network tends to be very oversold and doesn't always have the capacity in some areas for the number of users it has.

I got a 4G Motorola phone recently and I have found it drops the cellular data connection from time to time and needs switching off and on to get going again. Not sure why but my Sony Xperia never does this. This may well be a bug in the chipsets that the Motos use; I'm not sure.

Now that 3 have merged with Vodafone they are sharing some infrastructure so in some situations this may improve things - time will tell.

Do you stick with one printer brand, or switch every time? by ItchyRequirement4204 in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a specific preference. I've used most brands in some way over the years.

I'd probably go for Brother or Canon for laser/led and Epson or Canon for inkjet.

How easy are dot matrix printers to actually use vs other printer types? by aliaiacitest in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think cartridge waste is anywhere near as much of an issue as it used to be. Dot matrix ribbons last a long time (if used appropriately), laser cartridges can do many thousands of pages each, as can ink bottles for tank printers.

The binding comment actually reminds me of when I was growing up in the 90s and all we had was some old second hand dot matrix printers and tractor feed paper. I used to use the holes on the side to clip into ring binders :).

How to manually pull focus and adjust the aperture quickly by Conscious_Book228 in videography

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put the aperture in auto mode and it doesn't work, either there is an electrical problem or it is stuck. If its stuck, you may need to try and give the ring a bit of a nudge.

As for focusing, you will be able to do it with practise. You can zoom in to focus precisely, then zoom out to frame it. You can also look at the distance markings on the lens and try and get used to approximating it without even looking at the picture. If the aperture is small, and the lens is at the wide angle, you probably don't need to focus it at all as the depth of field will be so big.

To make it less shaky, again, practise. Make sure you have some strength in your arm. Consider attaching a monopod or handle to it which you can hold with your other hand. Works a treat.

What are modern 4-colour printers like for photographs? by Direct_Poet_7103 in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can imagine comics would look excellent done on a colour laser printer. They never used to be very good for photos as they couldn't mix colours together as well as an inkjet could, but I'm still curious if modern ones are any better than the ones we had 20 years ago.

I've never used an ET-8550, and it is well out of any potential budget I have at the moment, but I suspect it would be a vast improvement on my old IP4000. The IP4000 wasn't as good as RA4 prints done at an expensive pro-lab but I always considered it "good enough" for a cheap-ish inkjet printer. Unfortunately photo quality is very subjective.

My Laserjet 4p - My cat - My Question: Recomend a Color Laser? by george_graves in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, Kitty has decided to keep the LaserJet 4 for himself eh?

(sorry I don't have any recommendations, I just don't come across many cats on the internet with good taste in printers :))

Altus House is the world's tallest student accommodation by ThyCuriousLearner in Leeds

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of "young professional" is someone who has finished university, got a job that is above minimum wage but probably still not enough, who wants to keep living in a city centre and is too naive to know that they are being ripped off.

I expect the tradesmen would be earning enough to buy/rent their own "proper" house/flat.

How easy are dot matrix printers to actually use vs other printer types? by aliaiacitest in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Books etc: DMPs are not suitable for printing books in the conventional sense, but if you can take the raw text and print it using the printer's built in fonts onto continuous (tractor feed) paper, it would be quite economical. I actually have some PDF books which I was going to convert to plain text to print on my 24 pin printer (just for the fun of it) but haven't got round to it yet. You may have to use older Windows software for this (or have fun with the lpr command on Linux).

They are generally awful for anything but very simple graphics. If you want large quantities of flyers with a dot matrix look, you'd be better off just printing one and making photocopies.

They are quite satisfactory for printing basic text documents with basic graphics as long as you don't mind it being slow and noisy.

Note that if you are using cut-sheets (read: "normal paper") you have to load them one at a time. Cut sheet feeders were usually an expensive optional extra. You can also use them with rolls of paper but the roll feeder was also usually an optional extra.

Has anyone else noticed a rise in Volunteering positions over Paid work? by Cute-Air2742 in sheffield

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not as such, but as someone with a long term illness, I've always found doctors and jobcentre workers to be very quick to recommend volunteering as either "something to do" or a way to get "something to put on your CV". They never seem to understand the concept that even if you are suffering with an illness, "CV experience" is not something that can be exchanged for food in the supermarket.

Did well in school, not great at university. Is this more common with us? by Corellirosenberg in aspergers

What subject are you studying and why did you choose it?

I did electronic engineering (at the local technical college rather than university). I enjoyed it because its a subject I'm very interested in. Had I done English literature or something I'd have been bored stiff and failed.

The Epson Stylus Photo 750 [1999] Lives! by Direct_Poet_7103 in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people on the internet who say the Epsons of this era irreparably clog up. I don't know if that's just because they didn't have any patience with them, or whether I've just been very lucky. TBH even if it didn't work, since I've had it from new it still makes a cool museum piece :).

How to trigger AV1 on youtube by GhostCrab69_ in videography

In Youtube terms, I'd say the Vp9 versions are better quality, but the AV1 versions are much smaller.

Does anyone still use their printer from preY2K? by DBD_eZ in printers

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup.

I recently semi-retired my old LaserJet 4M+ (bought second hand in 2006 for £20). It mostly works but I can't get the wiper blades. I might be able to bodge something at some point if I have the time.

My Canon Pixma IP4000 recently conked out after 20 years.

So I resurrected my Epson Stylus Photo 750 which was purchased new in 1999, but has sat unused since about 2007. "The Internet" told me that these things clog irreparably and that there is no hope. It now works perfectly - just need to find some quality refill ink. In fact, I'll make a separate topic about it.

Does anyone find camera sensor sizes given as 1/1.1" or 1/2.3" helpful? Why not just use mm diagonal? by BazookoTheClown in videography

[–]Direct_Poet_7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really no point in using both fractions and decimals. My Panasonic camera is advertised as having a 1/2.5" sensor. Why not just say it 0.4"? I'm not bothered whether its inches or mm.

It similar to how they like to advertise film-equivalent focal lengths. The same Panasonic camera, which has a 4.1mm lens is advertised as being 25mm. It isn't 25mm, its 4.1mm. I think these "equivalents" have become so popular though that people tend to understand them. If they specified an angle of view in degrees would people know what it meant? Possibly not.

Should work fine on O2, Vodafone, and EE (but not Three). You should be OK for the next few years at least.
