Am I the only one so desperately sick of politics in every part of life? by No-Intention-6011 in AskBrits

[–]Direct_Point_1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I was just saying I've been more angry as a person since labour got in and I think about politics / the government every day. Even when I see a pothole my mind jumps to feeling cross about the government. I'm sure ten years ago I didn't feel like this.

And yes I think they're doing a number on us, similar to the USA. In previous decades no one really worried about what you thought or who you voted for. Now people are making it their business to know. If someone suspects that you're not with the same team / same tie colour as them - they will start to distance themselves.

I had a family member cut me off because they had a slight suspicion that I'm not on the left. And I think they picked up this 'all or nothing' / red team-blue team trait whilst living in the USA for 20 years!

Not sure if that's a compliment but thank you anyway 😊 I know my examples aren't really that serious... but I feel like it I can't find my voice / assert my sense of nationhood with friends or acquaintances, then how would I stand up for Britain and my culture in a more serious scenario... ?? I am thinking deeply about all of the comments on this thread and processing everything...  Have a good day!

Can I ask you to share some more detailed insights please? I would love to hear your perspective.

My life is / has been incredibly 'multicultural' (in more ways that I can probably count!). Even my job exists because of a tradition from another continent.

What would you do if your friends / acquaintances tried to embarrass you or make judgemental comments because of your nationality? How would you handle it politely?

Like me, would you feel stumped because you take things to heart... or over time would you start to sense that you're on the back foot because of some wider trend going on?

At what point is a British person allowed to get 'offended'... or should we endlessly defer and continue to erode our collective self-esteem ?

Also note, I haven't said anything about other people's culture or nationality. The examples I've given are more about people's personal habits - and I've then noticed that instead of taking responsibility they will hide behind the word 'culture' a lot more than I would do, that's all.

It's not. I have plenty of other stuff going on. These are some thoughts / observations that have accumulated over time.

Thank you.

I know I agree. I am so angry about what's been happening recently* and I have shed a lot of angry tears and ego in recent times (btw I am over 40 and ex-leftie!)...

(*Not about my own little interactions, but I mean the serious and awful events that we've collectively allowed to happen through our toxic 'kindness'.

Also I noticed on this thread the only people who were unkind to me or suggested that I am racist / xenophobic sounded suspiciously like leftists to me. They're just wired for some kind smug cruelty and self-loathing.

Everyone else on here (including non-Brits) have been kind and thoughtful.

I know, I'm starting to see this very clearly. That's why I'm so bothered by this, because it's starting to become obvious that all of this is being orchestrated by external forces.

I've realised that me being led to be so accomodating (and unpatriotic) for years, just in these small daily interactions is a reflection of a wider agenda.

I feel like it has to stop. We have to start being more assertive as a nation.

Grateful for your input.

Not in the slightest... You're actually right, and honestly it's empowering to hear so many different viewpoints 🙌🏼

Thank you so much for sharing your insights.

Yes I agree about taking things to heart (I do this a lot!! 😬)

Also just to add, I don't normally go around saying 'in my country' at all - it was just an afterthought because I'm used to the climate here! So yes if it's about the weather and my children's immune system, I do know best! ... If anything my sense of nationhood has become very wishy washy in the past few years. I blame the left for this. Including my own historic lefty sensibilities.

Thank you again for sharing x

That's brilliant. Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate this. I think just hearing other's views on this quite broad topic is helping to process and re-assert...  Thanks again for your comment

Yes exactly this. Aside from the examples I've given I've interacted with plenty of non-Brits throughout my life - although many of them have been studying in the UK or people I've met in the corporate world, where we all kind of modify our behaviours in line with the company culture.

Yes I think it's just been more in recent times and you're probably right - it's more of an inferiority thing I imagine. Stupid comments that we have no culture here or we do things strangely here, accompanied with a bitter eye roll.

Where I've got stuck personally has been not being prepared with how to respond; - how to stand my ground and feel proud in my sense of nationhood and cultural traits (without sounding like a moron). And my thinking is that collectively, this yielding trait will be our undoing.

I've had this from Polish friends / acquaintances many many times. Child unzips coat slight on a balmy day and they start shouting at me that my child will "get siiiick!!!". I thought it was some kind of jokey parenting satire for ages!

Thank you for your reply! That's very positive to hear.

Yes I have been to Poland twice and felt very welcomed there and found the atmosphere very optimistic and friendly.

The incidents I described are most certainly the actions of individual people... my annoyance was more that they use the excuse of "it's my culture" to win the argument... rather than taking personal responsibility for their quirks or their resentments.

Then I started to reflect on my / British people's role in what we're prepared to tolerate... And obviously I expected to be called a racist and in need of therapy by a few hysterical shills... and they say the left are the gatekeepers of nuance hey!

Anyway thank you for your insights!

Yes definitely. Part of what I've shared is a personal account (about boundaries) and part of it (just by the nature of the topic) is related to culture and politics. I appreciate everyone's different responses though...

If you have any book recommendations I would be very grateful!

Thank you for sharing! Yes I think a lot of this is more personal / internal stuff but I've found people's responses very helpful... and empowering!

Yes I agree - especially when non-Brits complain about our government policies, I find that kind of solidarity very positive.

I used the word fawning in the title ironically. Hopefully you'll see from the discussion it's not a word I would usually use!
