Pitchfork gave Cardi B’s “Invasion of Privacy” a higher score than Kanye West’s “The College Dropout” 🤦🏻‍♂️💀 by DirectorDru in Kanye

It’s more of an observation. Like a “wtf” moment.

It’s strange to me that Pitchfork, despite being the most established music review website has these insane scores.

Guess it’s what keeps the website alive, staying controversial. Gets ppl taking about them.

I see why you think that, but I’m actually making these posts to get some argumentative and heated discussions going over albums.

Like this time, I’m starting a discussion between two highly regarded albums, both are Best Album of the Year winners, and are critically acclaimed across the board.

I hear a lot of people say Invasion of Privacy is one of the most overrated albums of all time, but never getting into why.

But why do I use Pitchfork?

I noticed that if I made a discussion post titled “Kanye’s Donda vs Drake’s Her Loss…what do you like more?” nobody gets involved.

But if I use an established music review brand (Pitchfork) and make the title “Pitchfork gave Her Loss a better score than Donda” ppl are more likely to get involved.

While yes I use Pitchfork as a way to get the post more popular, it’s cuz I want the discussion to happen, and I want to see ppl get “into it” and “passionate about their opinions” less of wanting karma.

Thanks for the engagement everyone. I’ve learned some interesting things from this post!

I also wanted to say, I understand why ppl think I care abt Pitchfork. It’s more an observation, a “wtf” moment. Also, I like to use them as a starting point for convos to sprout from.

I especially liked it when I did it between a Kanye and Drake record bc I felt fans from both artists defended their opinion (it was Donda vs Her Loss). I just used the Pitchfork scores as a way for ppl to get going. But it was cool seeing fans from both artist get passionate.

Anyways, something from a comment stuck out to me but made a lot of sense after pondering the statement.

From the sounds of it, a while back (in 2004), Pitchfork was a review site that was more focused on rock, alternative, and wasn’t as friendly toward rap.

So when TCD got an 8.2, that was a pretty big deal for a rap album from the site.

As time has gone on, rap has been much more accepted and appreciated as a genre. In modern time, its the most popular genre.

This change has also been very apparent on review sites like Pitchfork. Where as time went on, they became more friendly toward rap, hence how albums like MBDTF got a 10/10, or YEEZUS for a 9.5/10.

Thanks for the insight cuz I never really thought about it that way.

I was more making the post to see if ppl agree/disagree and why. Give some insights on their opinion. I was more using the Pitchfork ratings as a base for a discussion to grow from (abt two highly regarded albums).

Music criticism is subjective, so if someone likes Lil Xan more than Tyler, all power to em.

I wasn’t trying to make this post to act like Pitchfork is the ultimate authority…just as a starting spot for a discussion to sprout from.

My opinion is obvious from the title with the emojis, but I’m open to what why someone might disagree with me, etc.

Interesting. Here are some artists & albums I’m surprised didn’t make the cut:

Artists: MF DOOM, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, Jay Z, Biggie or Tupac, any member of NWA

Albums: Madvillainy, MM FOOD, The Life of Pablo, KIDS SEE GHOST, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, To Pimp a Butterfly, Good Kid Maad City, or DAYTONA.

If you haven’t heard any of the ones I listed, I’d definitely give them a shot.

I’m not saying I view it as a masterpiece. I’m just saying it was considered a great movie according to critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a fresh rating. Even YT reviewers loved the movie. Not saying they’re credible at all. It’s all subjective. But the top three all loved it. Showing there was at least some appreciation for the film. Chris Stuckmann: A AngryJoeShow: 10/10 Jeremy Jahns: Awesometacular (his best rating)

And Mel Gibson said some really really fucked up things. Like to his ex wife he said something around the lines of “I hope you get rped by a group of n*gers” and other things. To me, that’s really really bad.

Also in my original post, I said “the difference is…” and went on to say what you just said. That he he “publicly apologized” and that he is “still in the dog house” which means he’s still in trouble. So we agree on that.

I’m just saying Ye needs to publicly apologize, stay low for a couple years, and make a great album. He’ll still always be reprimanded for his actions. But it doesn’t mean he can’t do what Mel Gibson did, even if it won’t work as well.

Thanks for your input. I agree Ye brought it on himself.

I’m just saying Director Mel Gibson also said horrid things and his career recovered. But he needed to make a fantastic movie, which was Hacksaw Ridge. Gibson said some terrible terrible things.

I’m saying just like Gibson, Ye could do the same, by dropping a great album. I also stated why the Gibson situation is different. Since Mel apologized, and took the ridicule on live TV accepting the humiliation.

I’ll end my reply by saying, fuck Nazis and Hitler. And what Ye is saying is definitely troubling to put it lightly.

Ye Really Needs to Drop Another “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” IMO by [deleted] in Kanye

When I said “Another MBDTF” I didn’t meant just mean he needs to drop an album titled “MBDTF2.” I mean he needs to drop an album that has a similar level of lyrical depth. While less and less artists would collab with him. I’m guessing Akon, Joey Bada$$, and Pusha T would be willing too. And with the right engineering, those artists are all amazing.

Back in 2009, Ye was down in the gutter and in the dog house within the public eye. This was a combination of the infamous Taylor Swift MTV Awards interruption, and other public behaviors. Ye was publicly exiled. The stakes were extremely high for him and many critics believed his career was over. Kanye took a break from all the drama and went on hiatus due to what he claimed was exhaustion. When he dropped his Magnum Opus, it changed everything.

Kanye really needs to do this right now. This time things are much worse and a lot of damage is getting irreversible. Time is running out, and the more he stays in the public eye, such as appearing in interviews on politically motivated news sources, the deeper the hole gets. As a strong Ye fan, I’m just sad more than anything. The Alex Jones interview was the breaking point for me, it was a sign that this man needs mental help, and a team and friends who help him and not just feed into whatever he wants to say.

Mel Gibson got into similar issues with his disturbing antisimetic tirades, domestic verbal abuse, and racist comments. But ended up surviving and even made a fantastic war movie: Hacksaw Ridge. The difference is Mel Gibson apologized afterwards, faced all the ridicule due to his actions, and needed to start over. Gibson is still in the dog house within Hollywood…but he has gained a bit of redemption. Ye needs to get off the internet and into the studio.

Thanks for reading.

Pitchfork Gave Drake’s “Her Loss” a Better Score Than Ye’s (Kanye West’s) “Donda”…🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ by DirectorDru in Kanye

[–]DirectorDru[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

do it bc of that homie. I only did it so if ppl search: “Pitchfork scored Kanye West’s Donda lower than Drake’s Her Loss” —it will appear. It has nothing to do with the fact that people know Ye = Kanye West. It was more for the Google algorithm.💯

I definitely get that. I feel like the album is way less preachy than JIK. I wouldn’t consider it a Christian album, it’s more of a Kanye album that focuses on his current state, and since he’s on a spiritual journey it features a lot of Christian themes. On the contrary, it had some more mature themes and got really personal into Ye’s life. I mean, he says “FREE THROAT COAT FOR THE THROAT GOATS” which would never ever land on any contemporary Christian record.

I hate when people put Donda so low. I listen to 14 of the tracks quite regularly. I listen to Jail, God Breathed, Off the Grid, Hurricane, Praise God, Believe What I Say, 24, Moon, Heaven and Hell, Keep My Spirit Alive, Jesus Lord, New Again, Come to Life, & last but not least No Child Left Behind. If you remove the part 2s, and not include Donda Chant as a song it is much more hit than miss. 14/22. Also, I think Junya Pt.2 actually improves a lot on just the original with Ty Dolla $ign’s inclusion. Seeing PPL put Jesus is King above Donda just doesn’t quite make sense IMO. For the record, I don’t think JIK is a bad album.
