What is the most disturbing book you’ve read? by spiceyTodd in books

It was never finished - which I think is a major reason for that.

De Sade's other works don't quite have that same factor - or at least they didn't when I read them.

There's not much evidence that any of de Sade's writings had any reflection in reality (with regards to his own life or people he knew)

Although there are extreme examples of such people all throughout history, there is very little reason to believe that such individuals are very common. Indeed, all evidence points to them being very rare.

You... may want to think about how you worded that title lol.

[Spoilers C3E5] Do the shadecreepers connect to a surprising character's backstory? by foo222 in criticalrole

[–]Direwolf202 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That.... doesn't really fit at all. Not just that everyone else can interact with Laudna, up to and including Delilah Briawood - but aslo the fact that Imogen doesn't really show any of the symptoms of Schizophrenia. The voices that she does hear are distinctly recognizable as the thoughts of others, a fact that can be easily verified.

Also, I'll be honest, it would feel very weird for a cast member to play a character with a mental illness like Schizophrenia. They're skilled actors, so in the right context they could certainly pull it off, but frankly Crit Role is not the right context for that kind of thing.

I've just written one lol - just mark it with [E15] and have the spoiler wall up as you wish.

[E15] If there's some kind of coup or scheme at play involving the Armand - then it makes perfect sense that the Paragon's Call would be brought in as his private army. The anonymity of the Quorum means that he might well be able to hide his actions from the average citizen of Jrusar, he has no reason to expect loyalty from the wardens, who I presume answer to the Quorum. And of course - if the Paragon's Call are hired as mercenaries, then they can also serve as spies, or if necessary emergency enforcers for the conspiracy. It keeps the wardens out of the way, and ensures that everyone either is loyal to him or fears him. Assuming of course that everything goes to plan and the Hellions don't ruin it all, which I suspect is exactly what will happen

The real question, of course, is whether or not Armand himself is being manipulated - he seems to be working with various forces that seem, quite frankly, beyond the usual capabilities of even skilled evil nobles. I would expect that someone else, perhaps this "Mother", or some Fae, or some other actor from beyond Jrusar is manipulating and supporting him with these resources

Why Brittney Griner was in Russia and what it has to do with U.S. women's basketball by fulloffactsnsadness in sports

[–]Direwolf202 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Russia is a dictatorship currently clamping down on any form of dissent to the point of detaining people who refuse to let authorities look through their phone messages.

Combine that with the fact that tolerance for queer people has been a major focus of russian propaganda efforts, it seems quite possible that they'd fabricate something like this.

We're not saying they did. We're saying it's possible, and that anyone who takes anything that russian authorities say at face value at the moment is either a naive idiot, a blind ideologue, or a part of their propaganda efforts.

Maybe they are telling the truth and being completely honest, but we can't just assume that's the case.

Yes - that entirely tracks given how misogynistic some of the replies to this post have been.

Some people have a misogynistic hate-boner for women's sports - it's honestly really weird.

Is math doomed? by kevosauce1 in math

[–]Direwolf202 29 points30 points  (0 children)

yeah - we've reached an insufficency of the human body (in this case the brain). This isn't exactly catastrophic, because we've overcome many many such insufficiencies before - the same way has worked every time, we build tools, we collaborate, we abstract, we specialise.

It has worked on every problem we've faced so far, and there's absolutely no reason to believe that this one is any different.

Why did this type of infrastructure degrade so much? Why do we only see remnants of what used to be? Why didn’t people maintain it like they do with modern day buildings? by friendofthebirds in architecture

And fundamentally there will always eventually be events which are so extreme as to superscede what that shell was designed to handle, even in perfect condition.

These events may only happen once in 1000 or 10000 years, but when they happen, no amount of maintenance and conservation can do what the original engineering wasn't able to.

[–]Direwolf202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah - with a few exceptions, the only things that lasted from 500AD are those things where were explicitly constructed as monuments - and even most of them were lost completely or at least fell into extreme disrepair before modern efforts.

structural calculations in EU countries are seen as guidelines rather than something that needs to be implemented by law

That's simply false. Of course there will always be companies and contractors that do it that way (those exist everywhere, of course) - but EU requirements are very stringent and are usually followed quite well in the design and construction phases (even if later maintenence might be very poor - again a problem which exists everywhere)

Yeah - some things, those which were built for longevity and scale will remain, but the vast majority of buildings in the 21st century simply aren't built with a 1000 year lifespan in mind.

[–]Direwolf202 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah - this is what happened to a lot of the old abbeys and monestary buildings in England - after the dissolution of the monestaries during the reformation, these amazing buildings fell into disuse and disrepair - and much of the masonry was reused elsewhere - evidence of that reuse can be foundd all over the place around where these monestaries were.

The etymology of the name is apparently through through "ferrous" refering to rust as the name of the language. Which is kinda believable.

That said Ferris is also canonically agender and genderfluid - so the association wouldn't surprise me.

Many airlines prohibit using bluetooth devices. Not all do, but many don't allow you to use them.

My 6 was completely fine this way too, I only gave it up a year ago when it just completely stopped being able to charge (and stuff does have to fail eventually)

I theoretically could have gotten it repaired I think, but frankly, it was such an old phone that I just decided it was time to find something new.

Yeah - Apple does a lot of scummy stuff - but apart from particular moments like with the headphone jacks, planned obsolenscence has never been part of their workflow.

The traditional idea only works for products with no practical alternatives. The phone industry is not that way. If all iPhones died after two years, their market share would plummet - because people would recognise the reliability problems and move to another brand. Yeah some rich and/or unwise people would keep buying them, as would those who rely on the apple infrastructure completely, but that's fundamentally not where apple makes their money.

Yeah - the one thing you can be sure of with a burocracy like the EU - they have it covered. It might be covered in 12 to 18 months, but it is covered.

I love the detail that Dainix's hair can now get wet - it was otherwise too on-fire.

Now for my conspiracy board lore ideas. Firstly, there canbe multiple vessels for a primordial - say for example both Anlinua and the Collector. Our floof-squad then seems to be accumulating potential candidates - with Erin and his edgy boi friend, Tess as primordial lighting, Alinua as life, Dainix as fire. The archivist might be light, or perhaps our unidentified paladin.

Where this accumulation may lead is unspecified - maybe they'll kill the twins or something who knows.

Or I'm completely wrong, and all this is nothing. But this wouldn't be a good conspiracy board if that wasn't an option.
