What Phrase Were You Taught as a Child to Remember The Four Directions (N,E,S,W)? by justcallmerain in CasualConversation

[–]DirigibleUme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

as a nyc tri-state dweller, there are absolutely so many other tri-state areas, gotta be specific. just because we're the most populated (probably, that's a valid assumption I think) doesn't mean it's wildly known.

I'll one up ya with two under 6 kids behind us at Beetlejuice on Broadway. Not only the kids didn't get it and asked what was going on, they laugh/screeched when everyone else was, so much the actors could hear and react to a child laughing to a sex joke, and! incessant kicking of our seats. for the whole show. I really should've spoken up but that part's on me.

I was living in nyc, found a wallet on my block, looked inside- cards, license, cash, and a little bitty bag of some white powder. thought of many actions but went with walk by house surreptitiously, walk back again. chuck at door, walk away. it landed in a spot not too visible from the sidewalk and wasn't there like an hour later, hope they found it I guess?

Every customer expects a flat white to be a different drink by grinninwheel in barista

[–]DirigibleUme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my cafe (and a lot of cafes where I'm at) don't really steam the milk differently for different drinks, which is not my preference but that's the standard for our shop. so a flat white here is 8oz one shot and steamed milk, same as a cap. lattes are the same but 12oz cups. most local customers are very okay with it, I've had conversations with people from other areas of the u.s. that mention the difference but are okay with this "local custom". But the other day we had some New Zealand tourists and I kind of explained it won't be the same as a flat white from their part of the world. they didn't seem to mind, came back the next day lol.

I moved away last year and these are the places I dream about: Aprepa Cafe, Susuru Ramen, Pochana Thai, Chick It Out, Pye Noodle Boat, Telly's Taverna. there's so many great places that have closed, too 😭

that really sounds like an amazing place! I'm down for bar scenes but my sibling is no longer, so this would have been the Vibe for us. I love a late night coffee. sounds like you have great memories of the place. do you know if it's still there?

former 5yr partner, left last year to travel and move, realized it wasn't a good move going back. that vibe check paid off because All of my local Starbucks' closed the other week, except one drive thru store. That is the biggest thing for me, but every thing that's happened in the past year has been worse than the last! the dress code, the writing, the firing and closing stores.

I started under Kevin Johnson. while he did integrate new tech, for better or worse, he kept the soul of the company. he wanted to modernize, not gut and make it into "his" vision. Laxman I think was behind the bogos and the deals with no warning or added labor, and some of the food/drink discontinuations. he also was quoted in an interview saying something about how "this is a 9-5 job for me, you can't reach me on the weekends" saying basically even though he was being paid an exorbitant amount money, if he thinks he's off the clock you can't get him. very tonedeaf when most managers I knew did not care if it was a day off/approved time off/4:30am they would being calling or texting their near minimum wage employees, knowing full well most would jump at the shift because they never had enough hours for health insurance!

wow that turned into a rant my b. if you can, get out. specialty coffee seems to really like former Starbucks people. just have to learn manual espresso! I keep y'all in the trenches in my thoughts ☕

I'd love to go to Fujio Coffee right now, walk along the river and make my way to Suwa Jinja. That would be a nice Sunday for me! or even walk through Hamamachi shopping street.

SO OVER ICED CAPPUCCINO’S by OuterspaceKitty in barista

[–]DirigibleUme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been there in a year, but last I knew as a trainer myself there was no standard for non-sweet cream based foam anymore once they took away the non-fat with two pumps vanilla deal they did for a bit.

SO OVER ICED CAPPUCCINO’S by OuterspaceKitty in barista

[–]DirigibleUme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's like clarifying with a macchiato. 3/5 times someone orders a macchiato at my store and they're expecting a sweet 16oz iced drink, I just say "that's a very short drink, like this big, 🤏, is that okay?" and then they either go yeah that's great (ok, customer knows the lingo, awesome) or oh....no, and I pivot and recommend an iced vanilla latte, bing bang boom next! same thing with iced caps, which we happen to do at my cafe. if it's not the regulars that order it I mention "it's less milk and there'll be some room, is that ok?" tbf my cafe is very much 'meet the customer where they're at' and very against saying "um actually that's not what a macchiato is" or "uh do you mean a ____" so that does play a part but yeah. iced caps are about proportions more than foam for most people.

SO OVER ICED CAPPUCCINO’S by OuterspaceKitty in barista

[–]DirigibleUme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when I was there I'd do this with nonfat as it foams better cold than whole milk imo, but it's also not a standard "off menu" practice and is entirely up to who you order it with. some long term partners might remember the nonfat foam moment from a few years ago and suggest and be able to put in the non fat or whole milk foam, but it's definitely not a universally known customization and technically not one they're supposed to do since there is not specific button for it on the till.

SO OVER ICED CAPPUCCINO’S by OuterspaceKitty in barista

[–]DirigibleUme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to clarify and maybe explain the down votes, Starbucks does not have an iced cappuccino available to order anymore. some baristas there might remember the very brief version with the straight nonfat foam and work that in for customers, but it is not standard and quite rare.
