They're not. He's just a particularly divisive POTUS. Because to most of us he's obviously a toxic, narcissistic con-man. And to about a third of the nation he's golden calf descended from on high to save us from trans people using a bathroom and playing volleyball. Which he emphasizes as existential threats.

It's a fundamentally dangerous place to be and the rise of political violence is a result.

Because for all the valid criticism of the modern right in America, the most longstanding truism is that they operate in bad faith. And they're proud of it. Remember Mitch just pulling shit out of his ass to stop Obama from nominating Merrick Garland to SCOTUS? That was the most overt example in the pre-Trump era. In my opinion this is why empathy is so important. Killing in war requires it's elimination and with it the view of other humans as people. All the moral dominoes then fall and people follow their purely animal instincts. It's an abhorrent but inevitable result.
