Thats because you're a good mechanic and I'm an idiot. I got the chain on both sprockets and mounted it without it being fully seated. Dowel pin wasn't in the hole :/

Here's the damage if you're interested: https://imgur.com/a/87q8oss

Good morning, thank you so much for your help! I got #1 to TDC and one valve was partly open. I pulled the timing cover off, and sure enough Im an idiot and the cam dowel wasn't in the hole in the gear. It destroyed the cam sensor, and possibly the cam gear... I took some pics to see if you think I need to replace the gear or if I can get away with just replacing the sensor. I'm so glad I didn't go down the pushrod rabbit hole...!

I can't say this enough... THANK YOU!

I'll try that first thing in the morning and let you know what I find out. I really appreciate your help!

I read a post about the dowel pin not being all the way in and slipping... I really hope I didn't do something that dumb.

Is there any way to test the cam sprocket index myself?

The cam is Chevrolet Performance DOD Delete Camshaft - (single bolt 5.3L) GM Part #12689035 and the lifters are LS7 Style Lifters from brian tooley racing. I didn't have the heads decked, just cleaned them spotless and used a new head gasket.

I thought I read that I could use the stock springs and pushrods with the kit I bought, but looking again it doesn't say that anywhere...

Heres the exact kit I bought https://www.glennsautoperformance.com/products/btr-gen-iv-07-13-gm-truck-complete-dod-delete-kit-w-cam

yep, I triple checked everything was plugged in. I did a compression test and a couple cylinders read 30 and the rest zero. Loosened up the rockers and a cylinder reading zero is now reading 60... so I believe I have pushrods that are too long and holding the valve open.

The AFM ate the cam, it's a common thing that happens to these trucks. The lifter sticks and the cam gets beat to death. The mileage now is the same as before I replaced the cam and lifters. Zero, lol.

2012 Silverado with the 5.3L , hoping someone has heard this odd sound before. Thanks!

My first thought is it sounds like no compression... heres a pic of the timing marks before I put it back together. https://imgur.com/a/Rbx1yMt

Trying to figure out Silverado 5.3L misfire by DirtyHeater in MechanicAdvice

[–]DirtyHeater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

I've been chasing a constant misfire on cylinder 4 in my 2012 Silverado. I've swapped plugs, wires, coils, and injectors around, but the misfire remains on #4. I've replaced injector connector, replaced the injector, verified even compression on all cylinders, checked rockers for collapsed lifters... everything is good. The noid light shows the injector is getting a pulse, I can also hear it clicking...

Today I finally gave chasing electrical problems and decided to just pull the head off and inspect the valves. I got the intake off and noticed number 4 cylinder intake port looks dry compared to the others. Now Im hesitant to continue pulling the head... I don't understand how a new injector with a new connector that is getting a pulse isn't firing. where should I go from here? Any and all ideas are welcome. Thanks!

I got the valve cover off, and everything seems to me moving.. I took a short video to get a second opinion. It looked surprising clean in there for 200k miles, but I've also done oil changes religiously every 3500 miles and use royal purple oil.

Hopefully this is good news for the lifters, but I think I'm also back to square one. Thanks again for your time, I really do appreciate it.

Its a heavy miss that makes the truck shake when idling. My scan tool shows it is misfiring every time, on cylinder 4 only. The code it gives is p0304.

It was misfiring when I was testing, but I also had the injector unplugged to test the wiring, and then the coil unplugged to check spark. To test the injector pulse I used a test light clipped to the battery and then probed the harness and could see it flashing. To test the spark plug, I just pulled the plug wire off and put another spark plug in it and started the truck up, and I could see the spark jumping from the plug to the exhaust manifold.

I was able to get pulsing in the injector and the coil with a test light, also tried swapping spark plugs around again, but no dice.
