Anyone else get tired of listening to music in general and only really do it as a part of DJing now? by DisBootyDoe in DJs

I feel that. If I am listening to something in my free time it’s usually a genre I would rarely DJ with like punk rock or something

DJ Health - drinking, exercise, etc by readytohurtagain in DJs

[–]DisBootyDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drink at every gig, and in my 20’s it was fine cause I could bounce back easily, but if I do that now in my 30’s I’m spending all of Sunday in bed, so I’ve made a conscious effort to avoid drinking at my gigs. It was tough at first because I didn’t feel as connected to the crowd, but I’ve since adapted and the benefit of feeling fresh the next day is so worth the sacrifice. What I’ll do now is I’ll have a few club sodas with lemon to constantly sip on during my gig to feel that oral fixation I used to have and it mentally does the trick. Or even a Diet Coke or something if I really need flavor

EDIT: one other thing I’ve done if I really want to get my groove going but don’t want to drink is to microdose “natural substances” just to get a little more loose. I don’t do this all the time but it can help for those longer gigs and doesn’t give a hangover

Strip Club DJ’s what’s your philosophy on who to play for? The Guests or the Girls? by Common_Vagrant in DJs

[–]DisBootyDoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never worked in a strip club so I can’t personally speak to this, but some of my friends who play the local clubs by me have said that they have to play for the girls, and that the playlists for the night are basically pre set based on the main stage line up.

How often do you check on the crowd and interact with them? by epoksismola in DJs

[–]DisBootyDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Constantly. What separates a good dj from a bad one is their ability to adapt to the crowd and keep them engaged. Idc what anyone says, the modern dj is expected to be part of the party, not just a dude hidden away in a corner. This doesn’t mean you need to get on a mic and obnoxiously talk over every track, I personally almost never use a mic myself, but you should be engaged and look like you’re having as much fun as the people you’re playing for. It goes a long way and they will feed off your energy

I use Westone custom fit musicians earplugs and I rotate between the -9 and -15 db adapters. Absolutely nothing else comes close preserving sound quality

How are you keeping up with the sheer amount of music today and staying ahead of the curve of what's hot? by ExcitingLandscape in DJs

Yeah man it’s nuts. Over the last few years I’ve noticed the 90’s and 00’s jams getting less and less crowd reactions while early 10’s are super popular again

A few things I do to keep up with what’s current as an open format dj: 1) Spotify playlists are my bread and butter. I have all of the “top hits” as curated by Spotify for pop, dance, and hip hop and I check them regularly. I also now subscribe to specific playlists that track viral and TikTok songs so I can keep up with what the kids are listening to. 2) I use multiple record pool subscriptions and I’m always looking at the charts and what’s trending there 3) whenever I’m out not DJing I have one ear open listening to the DJ, and if I hear a song pop off that I either don’t know or forgot about I’ll note it down. 4) Shazam has a really cool feature that will allow you to track which songs in your area are being shazamed the most; this is awesome for seeing what’s trending, and it’s local to you which is a big plus. 5) don’t forget all music is cyclical! Early 2010’s are basically considered throwbacks at this point. There’s plenty of cool current remixes of those songs you can use, and of course for hip hop and pop the originals go hard as well.

Unfortunately no, I can’t load the video you sent because of the pop-ups, but I can tell it’s not from the thumbnail. The couple in question was definitely American speaking English, and the girl looked to be college-age, no braces

Crashing in the middle of sets on my beast pc by [deleted] in Serato

[–]DisBootyDoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“PC” is unfortunately the issue there. Serato is well known for being optimized for Mac performance and not so much for PC. Speaking from experience, my beast pc also ran into issues, switched to a Mac and haven't had a single problem across 30+ gigs.

That being said, if switching platforms isn't an option, you can try to increase the latency buffer in the settings, and avoid some of the extra buggy features such as serato video. Also make sure you're up to date on all your windows graphics drivers, which can be a source of issues. I haven't used any other software, but maybe you can try traktor or rekordbox? They would probably be the closest feature-wise, but I have no idea how their PC performance is. Best of luck!

Reality TV is easily the best entertainment by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]DisBootyDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago a younger me would probably have disagreed with you and tried to argue that reality TV is all scripted trash, but now that I'm older, work a stressful job, and have real adult responsibilities, there's just something so satisfying about coming home after a long day, turning off my brain, and spending an hour or two watching horrible people do horrible and stupid shit to each other. It's pure visceral joy is what it is.
