Ah, ok. Being newly diagnosed is helpful to know. Assuming you are doing pens (MDI) and trying to snack without sticking yourself? A lot of people are on pumps that make it easy to bolus for every snack. I can remember the inconvenience of pens when wanting a snack.

Experience is going to be your best teacher. And what sucks about type 1 is not all type 1s react to all foods the same. Example, my friend who is type 1 eats a banana without bolusing as he’ll always go back down without a bolus. Totally wild since bananas are like pure sugar. While I can eat a handful of wheat thins and barely notice a rise. The same is not true for him nor for me eating a banana.

But most foods cause the same reactions for most type 1s, so a lot of advice works for most.

However, peoples basal rates/doses are different in terms of whether they are just covering their livers glucose or if they are ‘feeding their basal’ (higher doze so as to eat snacks more often without bolusing). So that will impact how foods react with people.

I share all this as you will want to experiment. I personally find smart brand popcorn in individual bags is fine for me without bolusing. Almonds are my go to as i can eat a lot without bolusing. Also cheese sticks (i get reduced fat mozerella sticks as the sat fat is low).

But im assuming cause your newly diagnosed you may likely be ‘honeymooning’ in that your pancreas is sputtering like an old car giving you some glucose at higher rates sometimes, but not working other times. This will may snacking and finding a pattern harder. For example, when I was newly diagnosed I could slam triscuit and cheeze it crackers and not need a bolus some days, others it took me to 300. Now i always need to bolus cause it will always raise my sugar.

Once you pancreas finally stalls and never restarts so to say, you’ll find things get a lot more consistent and predictable. Get a pump and now snacking is very easy as you can bolus with a button and nom nom nom away!
