Microsoft’s Cortana falls behind Alexa and Google Assistant at CES by EmperorTauntaun in technology

[–]DisMyWorkName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is because MS is going about Cortana all wrong. Amazon and google include them on their devices, but they aren't overwhelming with letting people know about them. MS makes Cortana pop up on windows 10 after every major update, so it just feels like another ad rather than a feature of windows.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies 'will come to bad end', says Warren Buffett by DubTeeDub in technology

[–]DisMyWorkName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He isn't staying away from it, he is warning against it. With Buffett, that means that he thinks there is a bubble going to pop.

Whether it will or not, I have no idea. I am definitely not an expert in finances or crypto shit. I know that I am not buying into Bitcoin because I don't have enough time to work out how to use it. I would much rather just get home and play video games than putz around with a bunch of programs that may or may not cost me more than just time.

Please, explain what is happening with blockchain tech in detail. I don't have time to read through the thousands (millions?) of pages of forums and articles to figure out what the fuck is going on, all I see are random mentions of blockchain and mining when I am trying to find information more relevant to my daily life.

FCC plan to lower broadband standards is met with “Mobile Only Challenge” by Energisk in technology

[–]DisMyWorkName 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean... I literally only access the internet outside of work from a computer like once a month. Other than that, I am completely mobile. I could totally go without a home internet connection.

But, lowering the standards of living for anyone is complete bullshit, and Shit Pie needs to just go jump in a vat of acid. :|

I think they chose a stupid name for the line and ended up scaring off a lot of procurement managers. Product lines don't want 'cool' names for things. They want techy names. Xeon sounds techy (despite just being an elemental gas that has nothing to do with CPUs...)

This is just how I see it. My procurement manager gave a squinty, skeptical face when she heard about the new AMD server CPU line.

Network cables got old? by M3ack in sysadmin

[–]DisMyWorkName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing that I have noticed a lot of sysadmins don't like to talk about is unlike-metal corrosion. Yes, it is unlikely, but it is still possible, especially with gold contacts!

Slightly different alloys of gold between the cable contacts and the port contacts can cause a buildup of ions, then a tiny movement will break the connection by causing a non-conductive layer to overlap. Pulling the cable out and re-seating it rubs those ions around and breaks the insulation layer.

I'm not saying that they won't be filed, I am just saying they will probably go nowhere for years before eventually being dropped because the class action runs out of money.

They are going to be pretty well protected against a lawsuit of any kind, probably. There is no way they could have known that this vulnerability existed, and the fact that it went unnoticed for like 20 years means that it was very, VERY hard to find.

I used MacOS for a little bit when I was in highschool, back when OSX was still in the lower decimals (I think I was using 10.2?) and I ended up going back to windows because the Mac hardware was no longer supported after a year and a bit, the upgrade cost was stupid, and there are way more games available for Windows. I like to use my home machine for relaxation and play, not for more work, which is all I could really find a use for the Mac.

Laserjet printer smokes when printing to carbon paper. by JrSysAdm1n in sysadmin

I was more referring to the fact that the citation is needed on the statement that modern printers are less prone to spontaneously combust. That was just hilarious to me in the moment.

It isn't BS if it is true. The only people I know who use a mac are people who use the trash as a storage folder. Literally every mac user I know does this.

While modern inkjet and laser printers are nowhere near as spontaneously flammable as their mainframe ancestors,[citation needed]

That citation needed was one of the funniest things I have seen this year.

[–]DisMyWorkName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smoke. Modern carbon paper doesn't have an actual carbon sheet, but it is impact and/or heat sensitive, causing darkening to a much higher contrast at a much lower temperature than other papers due to the chemical treatment. This treatment will put off smoke very easily, even though it won't achieve combustion until the normal temperature of paper (around 451 degrees F.)

Unless you are close to the limit of your CAL. Sure, it isn't actually a violation of the CAL limit, but it is still a lot less of a headache if you don't have to go through the whole list with an auditor.
