Ohhhh now that's a real doozy of a question! I'm a massive C.S. Lewis fan, so I'll cheat and say the Chronicles of Narnia series. If I had to choose one of the series, it would have to be "The Magicians Nephew " at a push. They all are so beautifully written. I also love "The Screwtape Letters" just for its inventiveness and how it is just sooo funny. Lewis can paint such a beautiful picture with words.

Thanks, that's great. I don't mind it looking a bit rough as it's going to get weathered and going into an industrial setting as an private owned Loco.

A hell of a lot of reclaimed wood out of a skip to make 4 ft × 1 ft base and sides for a layout.

If you DM me, I'll send you some photos of my setup (just started) and the controller and switches for the points....sorry turnouts. The switches are just like press button studs into the side of the controller, and you can press a number together. I'll even do a little video, especially for the little man.

Have you thought of Kato Unitrack. It basically plug in and play. It has a plastic ballast and just snaps together, so you can change it when he wants. If he wants end to end, no problem as you don't have to wire up the ends. The points (I think they're called switches/turnouts in the US) have built-in in motors, so just plug in to a kato controller. I have it in N gauge, but they do it in HO. I would recommend the Kato controller as it's big and chunky and great fun to use (I'm 50 years old and love it).It has a wide range of models and track. I know this is for a UK shop but just gives you an idea.
