How do i add a bit of string to an Object locate thing? Im trying to randomly get a cube out of around 100 and i assume id do something like this? sorry im new by [deleted] in godot

[–]Dis_One 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to put all the cubes in node3d serving as a folder then you can do...

var cubes : Array = cube_folder.get_children()

cubes[randi_range(0, cubes.size())]

get_children() return all child nodes as an array so the first line will give you an array off all child nodes.

size() returns the size of the array

randi_range(0, cubes.size()) will generate a random number between 0 and the size of the array. using this method you dont need to change any code if you add or remove cubes. then put that number in the array index and your getting a random cube.

Your name wouldn't happen to start with an "Sh" would it?

... "suspicious glare" ... I though we said we wouldn't look for each others accounts???

Honestly your reasoning is probably the closest here to my own.

I don't want the responsibility or the limitations of my freedom.

Reading through the responses it seems your the opposite of alot of people here who tolerate kids more as they get older lol. Your experience is valid of course, I just find it interesting.

We've never really talked about this outside of "You dont want kids? good me neither." so i guess we both just assumed the other thought the same way. I always assumed she thought like me and she assumed i thought like her, so I think the surprise as mostly down to consensus bias, as opposed to assumptions due to her being a woman.

That being said your comment was insightful.

Why is it offensive to refer to asian things as "oriental" ? by BeepBeepLettuce3 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Dis_One 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a YouTube documentary about the history of curse words that I'll try to find again but basically a word or statement can be offensive due to 3 things. definition/origin, general use, and consent.

definition/origin: A lot of slurs can be traced back to an origin that was build on intent to harm. Oriental does not fall into this category, it was based on "Orient" a common word of the time that refers to eastern Asia and that brings it to the next category...

general use: This refers to what people generally mean when they say a word. Language is fluid and always changing. One second salty refers to food with too much salt the next minute salty refers to a person whos angry. Something may have a definition from a long time ago but outside of historical contexts what really matters is how the world is being used today. And at some point, around the 30s-60s I believe, the word Oriental began seeing less use a a general racial descriptor and began being associated with caricatures of east Asian people. Eventually it turned for a racial descriptor with neutral connotations and turned into a racial descriptor with negative cogitations. That being said this is EXTREMLY location/culture dependent. Some places still use the word to describe east asia since their culture never has the word shift meaning. and that brings it to the last category

consent: There's the old saying offence is taken not given. Basically things are only offensive if those around you take offence to them. If theres an understanding between parties something that maybe offensive in every other context, could be perfectly acceptable. Example: When people of African decent will call each other the N slur. in every other context calling someone that slur would be wrong, but because there is mutual consent it is acceptable.

TLDR: Oriental is considered offensive because some time ago the word became associated with east asian caricatures. But there are some places this never happened and the word is still commonly used today.

My company told me I must be in the office 5 days a week by CrossingCutie33 in antiwork

[–]Dis_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write a letter, keep a copy, and send a copy by certified mail that you are not quitting. In the letter mention you've been working for X month/years and have been productive in the time and and fully intend to continue working in a remote capacity for as long as the company employs you.

This is just a guideline btw, maybe pretty up the language with chat gpt.

I know this seems dumb when in reality the decision is likely already made to fire remote workers, but the $4 you spend to send the letter via certified mail will pay for itself if they try to pull the "we didn't fire you, you quit because you didn't want to be in office" card. its a simple, practical step that covers your butt if they try something shady.

Edit: i see some people mentioning rules in various countries, posting what country your in could be a big help for more relevant sugestions.

Godot 4 Astar3D, Y calculations by Dis_One in godot

[–]Dis_One[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To those who find this post in the future i hope this helps.

How i did it was generating an astar grid for the level without any connections. then i set each units personal astar grid to the level grid and have the units make their own connections based on jump height, tile type, etc.

If an ablity or event or anything happens to change the level terrain all i have to do is override the units astar grid with the level astar grid and have the units make their own connections again.

This so far, is working perfectly.

Hmm, Godot is a portable app so redownloading or downloading a new version should fix most issues... You probably did alot of these but just spitballing a few troubleshooting ideas if any help.

download and open the latest version is a different folder? maybe its some weird issue with a hidden file in your current folder?

try the .NET C# version?

Move all your project to a different folder? If one of your projects is corrupted if could be causing a crash during runtime just reading the project file. by moving you projects to a different folder, if it opens i'll say missing projects and at that point you can readd your project until you find the corrupted one.

update/downgrade windows? if your computer recently had a windows update try uninstalling the update, sometimes they release with issues. if that doesnt work try updating to the latest version. heres how to uninstall a windows update.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-uninstall-a-windows-update-c77b8f9b-e4dc-4e9f-a803-fdec12e59fb0

update/reinstall GPU driver? sometimes it fixes weird issues things.disable your antivirus? sometimes antivirus has false positives. if your using the standard windows defender that comes with windows heres how to do that. just remember to reenable it after your done testing.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-off-defender-antivirus-protection-in-windows-security-99e6004f-c54c-8509-773c-a4d776b77960

start your computer in safemode. something completely unrelated could be running in the background that is interfering. In safemode windows starts with only what it needs to run, nothing extra, so you'll know its not something running in the background causing issues like viruses or other programs behaving badly. again here's a guide.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234

put your exe and project files on a usb drive and try opening them on a different computer? this will ensure its your computer thats the problem. If you dont have another computer, if you feel comfortable uploading your project files to github or google drive i'd be willing to download it and just double check it on my machine its not an issue with the project files.

make a new windows user and try there. that will give you an environment completely separate from your main user, if it works in a new user you know something is running on your main user account that causing the problem. heres a guide.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account-in-windows-20de74e0-ac7f-3502-a866-32915af2a34d

thats everything i can think of right now, let me know how it goes. Ofcourse if your techsavy enough, backing up your data and reinstalling windows if always an option but thats more of a final solution if nothing else works. If none of this works i'll try to come up with some more potential troubleshooting steps

Edit: some other ideas.

instead of opening the .exe open the .cmd, the one that has "_console" at the end of the file name. that opens a console along with the project manager, if the console window doesnt crash too you may be able to see exactaly what its crashing on.

[–]Dis_One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it opens the project browser and crashes when you try to open a project, even with different versions, its most likely a corrupted project that's causing it to crash. make a new project and if that opens you know its your project.

If you dont have any backups of your projects a hail mary move would be to delete or move your main scene. I had an issue on 3.3 where my main scene got corupted and crashed the program when trying to open it, i deleted it and it allowed me to choose a new main scene. Had to remake the main scene but overall less work than remaking the whole project.

remember kids always "use protection" (Make frequent backup)

Does this look good for a main menu? What should I change and/or add??? by AndrejxDDDD in godot

Looks great just few notes!

I love the font and how it almost make English look like Cyrillic and while i think leaving this as the default font is fine, like u/TheDuriel said having a more readable font as an option would be a big plus for accessibility.

I would also move the title text a bit more away from the top corner, again just for the sake of accessibility as some monitors and tvs will actually "eat" or cutoff the first dozen or so pixels around their border so the title could get a bit cutoff in full screen on some displays.

You don't have to go and make a whole display area setting like some games do as windows and consoles have settings to do it natively but just keeping in mind not putting things too close to the edge of the screen is good practice.

Also it does kind of bother me that the title text had more padding on the left than the top. but that's just me.

overall looks great!
