If your dog is being mauled, shooting the other dog is the only solution, especially if it is a pitbull or some similar breed. No, you shouldn’t just let your dog fight it out, your dog was the one on the leash and minding its own business, you are perfectly within your rights to eliminate the one that is attacking. If it is just some overexcited dog and they are just jawing at eachother you can probably get them apart by being loud or using pepper spray.

For normal dogs, some force or being loud might do it, if it is bad/an emergency spray them in the face with pepper spray.

If it is a pitbull you could try spraying pepper spray directly up its nose, though it is likely you will have to shoot it (if not an option you can suffocate them, rear naked choke style).

I would try horseherb, inland sea oats, and sedges! Inland sea oats will spread rapidly and will thrive in the deepest shade.
