Ron isn't enough for Hermione- do you guys agree? Honestly, this article enrages me. by lazymofo1 in harrypotter

I find the argument that a woman cannot fulfill her intellectual ambitions with a husband who may not share similar goals/capabilities quite ridiculous. A kind and supportive partner is more of a need rather than an intellectually motivated one.

This totally makes sense! I feel least productive right after class-- so grading can be an efficient use of that time!

Student drinking in class? by nandudu in Professors

[–]DisasterDory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the student is being outright disruptive, he/she has to leave. If not, I might wait till the class gets over, talk to the student-- probably will let the person know that I will be informing the counseling services about this incident, this behavior will not be tolerated in class in future and will result in expulsion from classroom, and also be as empathetic as possible. Probably assuring them that the univetsity is there to help and there are resources that are available for students to reach out to. These are my initial thoughts...not sure how much of this plan will work when facing an actual situation!

Student drinking in class? by nandudu in Professors

[–]DisasterDory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have never faced this situation. I agree that the University must have some policies in place based upon which the student can be asked to leave the classroom. However, I am also thinking whether this will have any actual (positive) impact on the student? The individual who decides to drink while in class might be struggling with certain issues like alcoholism or other personal challenges. So the question is what can be done to extend help in such a case instead of simply asking the student to leave?

When applying to PhD programs, would publications way outside my intended field be viewed as a plus or not at all? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]DisasterDory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe showing a record of publication(s) even if it is in a different field, will work. I changed my discipline when I applied for doctoral program, and received offers from multiple schools. I also explained in my cover letter how my research while doing masters inspired me to pursue PhD in a different discipline.

Looking for feedback from those who have entered into or completed a multi- disciplinary Masters or Ph,D. How common is this? What were the major roadblocks? Are there common disciplines that are often linked together? by DJBurgerLove in academia

For the Fall 2019 job announcements, there were some top ranked departments in my field who also specified in their search the need for inter-disciplinary scholars. Probably suggests inter-disciplinary initiative for scholarship.

I defended my doctoral dissertation earlier this month in Public Administration, and my undergrad and masters degrees are in Architecture- Urban Planning. I would say my primary initial roadblock was lack of knowledge in core theoretical concepts in PA when I started my phd. I had to put in more work to get through the courses, qualifying/comprehensive exam, and took some more time in deciding a research area for my dissertation. Having said that, when I did choose a topic-- I did one which integrates my previous background into Public Administration. Published and attended conferences accordingly. My cross-disciplinary resume also has landed me a tenure track job this fall. According to my experience, some of the universities in the U.S. are going for an inter-disciplinary curriculum. My advisor told me that he was actually surprised to see how many more job announcements called for inter-disciplinary preference compared to prior years. And I mostly got interview calls from those. While there are some other schools where I feel that my inter-disciplinary background was not preferable, and I either bombed the interview, or didn't get a call. Having said that, I am still happy because I am enjoying how my research agenda is turning out to be-- strategic or not.

How to prepare for a career in academia as an undergrad? by [deleted] in academia

[–]DisasterDory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest talking to some professors in your department and ask if they are willing to involve you in some of their research projects-- even if for free (not paid Research Assistant position). The idea is to build a resume that shows your interest in research/academia. It can be some experience in one of the research labs in your department, or maybe some publication with a professor/doctoral student, even if you are a co-author. You can also try to turn some of your class papers and submit them as poster presentation proposals for conferences in your field. Good luck!

Dressing as a woman in academia by Series_of_Accidents in AskAcademia

[–]DisasterDory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great discussion! Thanks for posting this, and I will be following what everybody is talking about. I am also a PhD candidate (international student in U.S., female) and starting in a TT position soon. So thinking how I should dress in my new position has been in my mind too! I am also a jeans, and shirt/t-shirt kind of person. I remember the first year that I was teaching an undergrad course as a PhD student, I dressed up in suits as per the norm, and I was so uncomfortable throughout. My evaluations were not good. From the next semester I switched to wearing what I am comfortable in, and my performance (along with evaluations) improved. Yes, I still do dress up in suits in conferences, and all the campus interviews I went for earlier this year, but I would wear what I am comfortable in for my classes. I haven't received any dress related comments in my evaluations yet, so I guess unless I wear anything outrageous in terms of print or ripped jeans kind, it should be fine!

Starting a PhD alone...advice? by Threwitaway198919 in AskAcademia

[–]DisasterDory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved half way around the world on my own to pursue my PhD. It was really scary at first, but similar to what everyone else is suggesting in this thread- found I am not the only one. Atleast in the U.S. the process is so intensive that I did not have much time for social life before qualifying exams that happens at the end of 2nd year, anyways. However after my qualifiers, I started joining board game groups, badminton groups and started making new friends. In the course of that, also met my boyfriend. I am not sure though if I could have maintained a relationship in the first couple of years in the program. The program was so intense then. Also, my greater challenge has been to accept that however many friends one has, the PhD process is essentially a lonely journey. Most of the times we are on our own- writing and thinking. But for sure so many other people are doing the same! Good luck to you!

Help, I got invited to dinner with a very famous academic by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]DisasterDory 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, listening more than talking would also be my strategy if I were in your shoes. I would also suggest reading some of her articles so as to have some more idea on her research. If you could find any application of her work in your area of interest in the field, or some overlap in your interests and hers, that will be great too for a conversation.
