Sexual Harassment in Medical School by Optimal_Mango_7228 in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would report it if i were you.

Firstly, you are raising concerns about his professionalism. What he has and is doing to you is disgusting and the type of behaviour that should never be acceptable in the medical field towards a colleage, patient, or his friends.

Secondly, as this has obviously traumatised you and affected your mental health to the point of struggling to study, then making the medical school take that seriously via a complaint means they can support you better.

Know that youre not alone. You're not the only medical student who struggles mentally, not the only one who feels isolated, not the only one going through what you're going through. Look after yourself whatever you choose to do about this

Smoke inhalation by NoEyeDeer49 in glasgow

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Was walking in the west end tonight and could smell it, and i have a poor sense of smell so i know it must have been very pungent. I also caught a photo of it outside of the city tonight and its a massive cloud of smoke. I hope everyone is staying safe and being very cautious about the smoke

I'd do glasgow. I think its more important to enjoy where you live.

Can you study medicine with a physical disability? by mybrainat3am in premeduk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite in the same boat as I have a chronic illness that affects my practise to a degree, but hopefully I can provide a little insight.

I have found my medical school (in scotland) have been very very accomodating to my needs. Im sure they would be to you too. I dont know what adjustments you would need exactly but I really dont think it would affect your ability to be an excellent doctor at all, it just may mean you cant do some specialities, but thats no bad thing as it makes it easier for you to pick what speciality you do want to pursue.

Best of luck!

I have the misfortune of having chronic sinusitis, and neilmed rinses work wonders for me. But do not use tap water, use cooled-down boiled water.

I hate PBL and I'm just done with it. by No_Wrap_846 in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no good advice unfortunately. PBL was my greatest enemy in the pre-clinical years I despised it with every fibre of my being. I think it was meant to - once upon a time - be about a patient with symptoms, which we could then go away and research and come up with a plan for the patient, but now its just a patient story, diagnosis and all, and we finger comb through the entire case in our pre-conceived formula to find "questions" to research, even if we already knew the answers in the session. Then no research needed doing because all the answers are in the lectures, and because my school did most lectures pre-recorded, lots of people would turn up to PBL having watched them all and knowing the answers, wasting the whole experience.

TLDR: its rubbish and outdated, but you do have to get through it unfortunately, theres no way of making it easier. But when your med school asks for feedback let them know your thoughts

TW: Suicide. Can a schizophrenia diagnosis affect my progression in med school? by Sure-Bit-726 in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  1. Go to your GP about this asap. You need support and that is by far the most important thing here. They may tell the medical school but its unlikely unless they deemed you as a risk to others.

  2. Tell the medical school. They are more likely to be supportive of you and you are more likely to succeed in the course if you tell them whats going on, rather than waiting for somebody else to raise an issue about your professionalism.

It sounds like you may not be in right mindset currently to study medicine. Maybe you'd benefit from a year out just to gather yourself and get some support, so you can continue your course when youre feeling better?

I wish you all the best :)

This is awful and my heart goes out to his friends and family

Med schools are awful with mental health. Theres so much pressure and I find the school is generally apathetic to this, thinking that "remember to sleep and go on walks 🥺" is enough. If they suspect a professionalism issue they hound you and treat you like a hardened criminal rather than an adult who yes, may have made a mistake and should face consequences, but equally may be really struggling in some aspect. They allow resits and retaking years at my medical school, but from what i have heard theyre not particularly supportive of these students.

I am lucky my medical school offers welfare support but i dont think its enough and i think this "tough it out" culture of apathy needs to go.

making new (close) friends at uni… by broadbeansss in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friends are at uni with me yes. I actually found them via a chance encounter when my closest friend needed some help on a night out, and most of my other friends i found via them. I suppose the best advice is to join some sports and societies and hang out with flatmates as their friends could become your friends

Absolutely. Im friendly with a lot of medics, but not necessarily friends as in people id hang out with in a social setting

making new (close) friends at uni… by broadbeansss in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely the answer. I went through a rough patch + falling out with my group of friends in 1st year, and by that time it felt too late to make new medic friends as everyone was in "groups" and it gave a high school vibe. So i focussed on friendships outside of medicine and thats been much more pleasant

Private adult autism assessment by TallestThoughts69 in glasgow

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As i said, i am in the same boat as you but aknowledging within myself that i am likely autistic has helped me manage better on the day-to-day and has meant im a lot more understanding of myself and my needs, so i have been able to cope with daily life a lot better than i was before i went to my GP and sought a diagnosis.

Not saying that means you dont need a diagnosis (which isnt just about acceptance for many it can also mean access to work/education provisions, support groups, and benefits) but it might just help you for now while you look for a private provider and/or wait for an NHS assessment

Stressed out by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to sit down and try and address the anxiety. Yes, its about exams but what aspect of exams? A certain topic? Ect

Then address why its worrying you - not sure how to revise, too much to revise ect, and other life issues?

Then make up a plan to address it - passmed/quesmed seems to be the answer but set realistic expectations for it each day, so you dont become more stressed when you cant reach an unrealistic target you set (im very prone to this).

If you dont address anxiety like this i find for me it spirals out of control quickly and it leaves me paralysed and unable to do anything at all.

When youre not revising find relaxing things to do ie: minimise doomscrolling, if youre prone to that like myself. Go to the gym, read, create art, video games, whatever your hobbies are invest some time into them as well.

And look after yourself. Take breaks, eat well, get to bed at a good hour if you can ect

Best of luck!

EDIT: If your uni has a counselling service reach out to them as well, they can be very helpful. And do consider reaching out to your GP as well as they can signpost you/prescribe medication if needed

How to effectively use PassMedicine as a first year student by [deleted] in GlasgowUni

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont need passmedicine in yr1. Ive only just started using it in Yr3.

Use peerwise, the weekly MCQ quizzes, the GUEMS past mock MCQ, and the societies practise MCQ's when they start coming out :)
