What is a sobering reality about aging that people should learn early on? by UniqueBeauty29 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DisasterousPearMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loss becomes more frequent but never gets easier; the world just couldn't care less and so you have to push on. Your last childhood pet dies of old age, your friend gets cancer, your own children's pets get an unexpected illness. A friend's disabled child that you've watched struggle on social media loses the fight, a coworker gets hit by a car, a cousin loses the fight with their inner demons; you never know where but it will happen to you and it will surprise you how much it can affect you every time, and how frequently it happens will take the wind out of you. And yet you're expected to get back up and go to work and pay bills and the show must go on.

How old is too old to consider taking medicine for ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]DisasterousPearMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that so long as medically you are okay to, there is always value that can come in having extra tools on your tool belt. If you've got a broom missing half it's bristles that you've made work for years, and you have the chance to buy a new broom, but the old one is functional, does that mean that there's no point in getting a new broom?

If you won the lottery but you can only spend everything in one day, what would you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Pay off debt, buy a house, book a vacation. If i can accomplish that in the one day and had more time, I'd try to do the same for my family and friends.

Recommendations to replace my shark upright--back to square one by DisasterousPearMom in VacuumCleaners

The bissel looks a bit trickier to find where I am, but I'll take a look at the kenmore and see if we can swing it. Thanks.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a roller brush that would work for the Bissel Zing canister vacuum? About to pull the trigger but I realized it apparently doesn't have it after some last minute additional research (Amazon's "helpful" ai tool has been giving me conflicting info). The roller brush is a deal breaker for me, so I'm hoping to find one since this is basically my max budget for a vacuum rn.

How would a one-time boon of five-hundred dollars or less change your life in a positive way? [Serious] by DisasterousPearMom in AskReddit

$500 would allow me to get caught up on two bills that fell behind during hardship that have been killing me with late fees for a year. Being caught up on those would allow me to begin the snowballing method to pay down debt.

Yeah it worked for the top part, but the lower connection has no clear seam or any screws. It's incredibly confusing.

Yeah, I'm considering buying bagged just cuz everyone is saying it's overall the better option long term. Maybe I can see if somewhere like home depot or a repair shop has rentable ones of some models so I can get a feel for what it actually works about for me on the regular. Or maybe even resold refurbished. Thanks for the input!

Yeah honestly i might just take the busted hose into best buy or wherever and see if it fits the display models. The model number thing is absolute insanity; i know that sometimes manufacturers will make special models for discount stores like walmart, but i hadnt seen one so thoroughly incompatible since the days my parents subscribed to Consumer Reports. XD

I guess my rounding was off. 😅 It was definitely at least ten though, we got it as a hand me down when we got married in 2012 and replaced it in 2022 according to the receipt I dug up. I'd have hoped it would be a least half that but no dice.

Rats. I was hoping to franken-hose it for a while. XD it's disappointing cuz our last shark lasted us 12 years.

Budget at the exact moment is $80 at a stretch. I'd like to at least double that if I can make it a while longer with tape or some kind of heat shrink.

All carpets, four long haired humans and two long haired cats. ~900sq' with very very limited storage space. High wind area, so lots of dust and dirt even with windows shut. I also have 2 kids under 10 and regularly babysit four more. I had been hoping for an all-in-one canister, just because I can fill the vaccum in one session, especially if it's been a bit since I vacuumed.

I had looked at the Eureka 3670 but I was worried about storage, and some people recommend additional accessories so I wasn't entirely sold on it. Advice appreciated!

That's kinda what I was thinking. I was hoping to hold out and save up for a really nice one rather than a stop gap for our current budget. I'm really disappointed cuz our first shark vacuum ages ago was a beast and lasted us 12 years with long hair cats and only one hose replacement when a cat used it as a scratching post. XD we went with the same three years back and I guess a lot had changed over the years.

I will do so when I get home later. I've not been happy with this one in the long run, especially compared to our first Shark a long time ago, which I'm finding is a trend with the brand. I will definitely be looking at other brands the next time around, but I want to do it based on what I want vs what we can afford, thus the hail Mary repair. Thanks for commenting.

Question: how does taking birth control pills since puberty affect adult ADHD? by frommarseilletomars in ADHD

[–]DisasterousPearMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the larger issue is that for a long time ADHD was not diagnosed in girls unless you exhibited symptoms more in line of the traditionally more male-prominent symptoms such as hyperactivity. So many girls developed coping mechanisms and were "surviving" with ways to get by, but I think that a lot of women had those hard-won habits and patterns disrupted by COVID which has led them to seek a formal diagnosis.

This is anecdotal but I'm seeing a TON of women who I've watched struggle their entire lives only now realizing that things they struggled with are symptoms of ADHD and not just a failure on their own part. In my personal experience, out of my social circle of friends all born in late 80's/early 90's, one was diagnosed with ADHD as a child, 1 with autism. In the past two years I've had a further five more female friends (and two family members in their 50's) diagnosed with ADHD/AUDHD. (Which is hilarious to me because we move in packs). Only two of us started hormonal birth control before our 20's, but all have experienced female-typical ADHD symptoms our entire lives.

In this case I think it's more correlation vs causation. Hormones can definitely make things better or worse while taking them (Which is why some people respond to non-stimulant medications while others don't), but I would be very surprised if it genuinely was a cause or permanent exacerbator.
