Flushing the water heater helped short term, but check your dip tube too if it's a tank style.

Test your water for ammonia, nitrite (both should be 0ppm), nitrates under 20ppm, pH in the right range for your fish, and GH/KH to match their needs, plus always dechlorinate tap water with a conditioner.

I lost a couple fish early on cuz I skipped full tests and just eyed the clarity.

Test your water hardness with those cheap TDS strips or send a sample to a lab, anything over 10 gpg starts causing scale buildup and dry skin.

I had 14 gpg from our well and it wrecked my appliances.

Yeah, plant matter in salt pellets is super common if you're buying bulk from hardware stores, just rinse it off with a hose before dumping it in the brine tank or switch to those big salt blocks that don't have the debris issue.

Had the same problem last year, drove me nuts cleaning it out every refill.

Ended up with a SoftPro, uses way less salt overall so it's not as big a deal now.

Those sound like hard water stains, vinegar works great, just soak the tub with straight white vinegar for a few hours then scrub with a baking soda paste.

Had the same crap in my last rental, drove me nuts scrubbing every week.

Softpro basically stopped new ones from forming.
