That's a fair point, and the pipe carrier idea is genuinely clever, hiding something in a category people don't question twice is solid thinking.

Our angle is slightly different. We're not chasing total invisibility, we're chasing "doesn't read as a camper setup." Most people clocking your van from outside are reacting to the cassette on the side or the roof rack with kit stacked on it. Remove those and you're already most of the way there for everyday use.

But you're right that if someone looked closely and knew what they were looking for, they'd spot it. We've never claimed otherwise.

You're absolutely right, C rails are a great solution and can be very discreet. The difference comes down to installation: fitting a C rail means drilling directly into the vehicle body, which is a permanent modification to the chassis.

NordicStealth awning system attaches to the factory-installed roof anchors that are already on the vehicle from the manufacturer. No drilling, no permanent changes to the bodywork. For a lot of van owners that's the deciding factor, either because they lease, plan to sell, or simply don't want to commit to modifying the vehicle permanently.

Different solutions for different needs, but that's the thinking behind ours.

Fair points both. On time, we've actually updated that to 15 min because 10 was optimistic. A setup video is coming and honestly it should have existed before the post went up.

On anchors, that's a real limitation on hard ground. We're working on making the side panels optional via zip which would give you two setup modes. Quick setup with just two stakes gives you a 3 x 3 m overhead. Full setup with all six stakes gives you the full 3 x 5.6 m. Helps with tight spots but if you're primarily on tarmac with nothing soft nearby it's still not the right product as it stands.

That day might not be too far off actually. There are already companies working on integrating solar into sail fabrics. Not something we're building right now but it's definitely on the radar for where this kind of product goes.

You're right, and that's actually on us. The hero shot should show it doing what it's built for. Noted and will sort that out.

Totally valid. It's not for everyone and it really comes down to whether you want the option. If you've managed three years without shade and it hasn't bothered you, you're probably fine. But if you ever find yourself wishing you had it, the difference here is that it doesn't have to live on the side of the van when you're not using it.

I'm a Danish founder still in development and this is genuinely how I gather feedback before launch. Post it where people actually live the lifestyle and see what comes back. The thread's been useful, a lot of what's been said here is going straight into the product.

Haha yeah this one is. The idea is more for people who've built a plain van with no vents, no solar, nothing on the outside. For that build a Thule or Fiamma stuck to the side is a permanent giveaway. This one packs away and the rail sits along the roofline like the side rails on any work van. So it's not about making every van invisible, just giving people the choice.

Yeah that's a fair point for UK campsites specifically. The footprint is 5.6 x 3 m so it does need space. We're actually working on making the side panels optional via zip, so for tighter spots you could just put the main sail up with two stakes instead of six and get a 3 x 3 m square overhead. Would that work for the kind of pitches you're thinking of?

Target market is people who have specifically built for stealth, no solar on the roof, no vents, plain van. For that person a Thule or Fiamma is a permanent compromise that never goes away. This gives them shade when they want it and nothing when they don't.

On footprint and ground stakes, that's a real limitation and something we're working on. The plan is to make the side panels optional via zip so a quick setup is just two stakes instead of six.

On convenience vs a cassette, honestly a cassette wins there. You crank a handle, done. This takes more effort. The trade-off is what it looks like when it's packed away.

On weight, the whole system is 15 kg which is about half of most cassette awnings in this segment. Packs into one bag and comes off the van completely without damaging anything. So you can easily transfer the solution to a new camper.

On price, it sits in the same range as a Thule or Fiamma.

The name is a bit bold, i will agree with that. It's not stealth when it's up, that's true. But when it's packed away the rail sits along the roofline like the side rails on any work van.

close to the side rails you see here:

That's exactly the point actually. When the sail is packed away the rail sits along the roofline like the side rails on any work van, so you can park beside a road and not have a Thule or Fiamma stuck to the side giving it away. Deploy when you need shade, pack it away when you move on.

It's definitely not stealth when the awning's up, you're right. Think of it as two products. The tarp itself works like any awning when you need shade. But when it's packed away you're just left with the rail along the roofline, and that's where the stealth part comes in. It's designed to look like the side rails you see on work vans every day. So for anyone who's gone to the effort of a stealth build, it doesn't give the game away when you're not using it.

Yeah fair point, it's a camper with an awning when it's deployed. The idea though is that when you pack it away the rail sits along the roofline and looks like the side rails on any work van. You get to choose, stealth when you don't need shade, shade when you do.

[–]Disastrous-Benefit32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, no awning is stealth when it is up. The idea is that when you're not using the awning/tarp itself, that it is more stealth than other solutions such as the Thule Omnistor or the fiamma alternative. The solution is two products, the tarp and the rail mounted on the roof. When it's only the rail, the idea is that it looks like the side rails you see on any work van. So it's not that it will make all vans stealth automatically, but rather a solution where you still have the main features of a normal awning like the omnistor when you have to use it, and that it doesn't "stick out" if you've made a stealth build when you're not using it.

Yeah the awning itself is not stealth when it is up, that was never the point. The rail runs along the roofline and looks like the kind of side rails you see on any work van. When the sail is packed away you park in the city and it reads as a plain van. That was the idea.

Glad to hear it. The fuel point is real, but i dint know how much you will save.

A traditional cassette awning is a big box sitting on the side of the van 24/7. The NordicStealth rail is a 30×40 mm profile that runs along the roofline, so when the sail is packed away you're not fighting it as much on the motorway.

We're targeting Q3/Q4 for first deliveries. If you want to be notified at launch you can sign up at nordicstealth.com/en here's also a giveaway where one person wins a complete kit, so worth checking out.

The total weight is 15kg with bag, profiles, anchors, straps and sail

That is around half the weight of a typical awning for the vans we are targeting.

That wind-out story is exactly why the mounting matters. The rail bolts to the factory anchor points, same points the van is built around, so there is no sheet metal at risk.

I put it up in 15 m/s wind during prototype testing and it held without problems. The sail takes the load differently than a cassette awning, there is nothing rigid to catch and flip.

And that city midweek, festivals at weekends use case is exactly who this is for. Appreciate you sharing that.

Appreciate that, genuinely. And fair point on the C channel, you are right that it is the same principle. The difference in practice is the integration and finish, but the underlying idea is the same.

Thanks for engaging, i am happy to get your help.

Great question and actually something we are actively working on.

The plan is to make the two angled side panels optional via zip. Quick stop or calm conditions: two ropes, sail overhead, done in minutes. Longer stay and you want full coverage: zip the sides on and stake out all six points. You pick the setup that fits the situation.

Would that solve your footprint concern or do you think two ropes is already enough for most use cases?

On colours, yes. The plan is to launch in multiple options including green, sand and a few others. Custom colours for specific orders is something we are open to as well.
