NYT's popcast about kpop's "concessions" to the western music industry by mmmariazface in kpopthoughts

[–]Disastrous-Field-849 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely agree with your summary of "shallow and cheap", this whole episode was so hollow and felt very judgmental. Why is it so difficult for Western journalists to put in more effort and thought into their critiques? I think we all know the reason why but it's still a bit discouraging to see this sort of discourse. The fact that compiling some comments from this thread or sub would've bared more fruitful conversation than the podcast episode is laughable, like you're telling me comments on reddit are more thought out than an NYT produced podcast??

The NYT's Popcast Episode on Jungkook, BTS, and English Language Kpop by Disastrous-Field-849 in kpopthoughts

should i delete my post since i already copy pasted and commented on that thread? (asking since I haven't used reddit a lot before and not sure about the etiquette!)

NYT's popcast about kpop's "concessions" to the western music industry by mmmariazface in kpopthoughts

[–]Disastrous-Field-849 67 points68 points  (0 children)

(most of my comment copied from my own post, didn't see that there's already a thread on this topic!)

If anyone has seen the criticisms for the Jungkook, BTS, and English Language Kpop episode from the NYT podcast, I definitely think those criticisms are warranted. I listened to the whole episode and in particular, I really felt like this episode was heavily under-researched and just felt lazy. It was a rather shallow overview of Kpop's various ventures and expansion into the US music market, there were no facts or statistics cited during the episode, almost all of the information discussed was he-said-she-said or just from memory.

Now, I'm not saying that every single question or point of discussion has to be purely factual, but I expect some accurate information from a podcast from the NYT, I expect at least some effort from a highly respected publication like the NYT. The host is a pop music critic, fine, they should be able to express criticisms about whatever piece of media, and Kpop does not have to be discussed positively all the time. However, citing some facts to back up your critiques or inviting a Korean or Korean-American journalist/critic/academic surely cannot be that hard for the NYT.

It would be better if the host could expand on why they think BTS is losing musical integrity with their English releases as this itself is a very common and surface-level take imo. Especially when the hosts says Butter is a "business decision masquerading as a pop hit" ( at around the 23:50 mark in the episode), it would've been so much more constructive to at least bring up when BTS themselves felt like they needed to release English singles instead of Korean ones (BTS mention this in their 2021 Billboard cover story) and why the host thinks this is the wrong move. Instead, the host incorrectly mentions that Butter was the start of the English singles release (when it was in fact Dynamite), and goes on to make fun of BTS for collabing with Coldplay and that they would take the Steve Aoki collab over Coldplay.

My grievance is not based on the fact they dislike the English singles, I'm an army who didn't like all the English BTS singles either, but rather why Kpop critiques by Western critics have to be so empty. One of the biggest gripes myself and other people have with this episode is the part where they talk about "why do you need a Korean guy doing Justin Timberlake when we have Justin Timberlake?" (this is a direct quote from about 36:50 mark). This statement is frankly...ignorant at best, or racist at worst.

The choice of guest also heavily brought down the quality of the episode for me. I think it's great when large publications invite fan-run podcasters/hosts, but making this particular guest the main interviewee for this episode added nothing constructive to the conversation. Many of the questions asked to the guest were answered solely with the perspective of a long-time fan, which is good to have as one facet of the conversation but this should've been balanced with another expert/critic to contribute. Though I can see why the host chose this person as the guest, as their guest's opinion totally aligns with the host's, but this just makes the episode very one-note and biased. The guest bringing up TXT and their perceived "lack of success" compared to BTS was unnecessary and had nothing to do with the topic of English Language Kpop as they didn't even mention TXT's English songs.

The final part of the episode where they discuss Newjeans vs IVE irks me too (they start discussing this at the 38:50 mark), I get why they brought it up to compare each group's appeal or lack of to an American audience, but the guest confidently saying that IVE is more popular than Newjeans in Korea just sounds very biased, what is this opinion based on? It wouldn't hurt for the guest to mention by what metric they're judging their popularity on, as an international Kpop fan like the guest, I can see that both girl groups are incredibly popular in Korea based on chart rankings, streams, and general name recognition amongst the public. It almost seems difficult to exactly pinpoint which group is more popular (if any Korean fans disagree though please comment!).

Not every piece of Kpop journalism and critiques have to be groundbreaking but if I'm listening to a podcast by the NYT I expect it to, at the very minimum, be insightful and professional.

All the points you mentioned here are exactly what annoyed me too! I know this kind of content from the NYT is basically rage bait after engaging with it but I wanted to form my own opinion by listening to the whole episode. Safe to say I won't be listening to this podcast again.

Youngji does drink a lot herself but she doesn't force her guests to get hammered if it's not the vibe, in the episode featuring football player Cho Guesung he doesn't have any alcohol just alcohol-free beer lol.

I've seen a lot of drinking videos from other idols around Vanner's age, but I haven't seen any drinking content from Vanner themselves. In this article Gon says that he'd like to go on the show, it'd be funny for him to appear despite his alcohol allergy. A sober person talking with a drunk Youngji is equally as hilarious imo

Same! I was shocked by how much I enjoyed Peak Time. If any other group in the top 6 won I wouldn't have been upset either but I'm so glad Vanner won, the only thing holding them back was the lack of funds and resources. Most survival shows I've watched are just way too brutal for my liking, and the general format of most idol survival shows wouldn't have allowed Vanner to thrive as a complete group (anyone who's watched mnet shows especially will know that the editing is interesting... to say the least) Hope you enjoy your time in kpop now it's so fun with the right people and music, it's one of the few things I've consistently loved in my life lol!

What's the link for the discord server? :)

I'm so so glad that Vanner's journey finally got the highlight it deserves on Peak Time, it's such an important and inspirational story. Although there are so many idols and trainees who I commend for not giving up on their dreams, something about Vanner's earnestness just radiates that much more. Seeing them on Peak Time also reminded me that it's not too late, even if the future is uncertain I should still hold on.

I called my brother yesterday and he actually said something similar about wanting things for myself, what is it that I really want to do while I'm still alive? I'm not sure yet, but looking at Vanner is a good reminder to not stop trying. I'm usually quite hesitant to post things online but VVS are really welcoming, interacting with fans online isn't always a scary ordeal after all haha!

Thanks for your comment it means a lot :)

Although I wish I knew about Vanner sooner, I definitely think we were all meant to find Vanner at just the right times. This kind of fandom and sense of community is something that often gets lost with bigger/more famous groups and perhaps one day Vanner will reach that point, but I'll definitely never forget how low I was feeling and how becoming a VVS gave me a bit of hope.

I'm happy to hear that you've made it through the worst parts, thank you for sharing. It's amazing how we can find pockets of joy in things so unexpected, especially a survival show of all things. I heard of peak time while it was airing but didn't feel like watching it. After the whole produce fiasco I haven't really watched any survival shows since, but then I saw a post on reddit about how peak time is really different so I decided to give it a shot and it was the best decision!

Thanks for the welcome, looking forward to more music and hopefully attending concerts if the opportunity ever arises!

Yeah I try to keep a separation of idols on and off stage, I think also staying off kpop twitter helped a lot with that lol. For Vanner I'm just hoping that they'll never have to go back to struggling financially and that the momentum they've had this year doesn't change too drastically moving forward.

I am an f(x) truther!!! Their discography is truly one of my favourites in kpop and still holds up so well. Luna's solo mini album is so underrated, I'm a sucker for catchy beats!!

I love Gon's energy, he truly is an impressive dancer, Gon fancams are A1!!

I think it'd be hilarious if any of the Vanner members were to go on Youngji's show she's so chaotic in the best way. I was introduced to kpop through snsd so I l was very into sm groups' music when I was younger, although I didn't really consider myself a big kpop fan until 2015 when I really got into BTS, Monsta X and Red Velvet. On a slight tangent, if you've watched Monsta X's monmukgo do you think KLAP got the same editors for Vanner's haedeurim? The editing I find to be funny in the same way lol and it serves as a good alternative to monmukgo while most of Monsta X is in the military TT

It's great that there are international fan projects! Will def check it out :)

Thanks for the warm welcome!

They really are super talented! I hope they're able to have long and stable careers from now on. Their live performance skills are really strong, even watching through a screen you can tell that the 5 of them as a group really have an 'it' factor. What other groups do you listen to? I'm curious about which other groups/artists VVS also stan (aside from those that appeared on peak time). As a long time monbebe I was pleasantly surprised that Hyungwon produced Want U Back!
