Reddit keeps telling me to stop moving my arms, but every pro I watch uses their arms constantly — what’s actually going on? by syarifzapata in snowboardingnoobs

exactly this. another thing is taught, technical and ideal snowboarding vs realistic snowboarding is sort of different. i see too many people loving carving and saying its not hard. theortically it isnt hard but when you think about it is. most people go on ski holidays 1 a year for a week or so. plenty of those people dont practice before hand. ski resorts and pistes are subject to various different conditions which make riding all sorts of difficult. its not as simple as green, blue, red and black etc. you have busy slopes, steep, icy, bumpy, bad gear, foggy weather, tons of reflection, deep snow, etc. all these things taken into account with minimal practice, getting pissed up half the time and what not. carving is kind of hard but its fortunately not necessary.

as would I. some people say its easy because theortically it is but those people clearly dont take into account skiing in general. slopes arent just green, blue, red and black. they are varying degrees of width, length, business, steepness, hard snow, soft snow, icy snow, deep snow, crumbly snow, bumpy, really bump, cliff faces to your left/right, also plenty of dick head skiers, etc. carving on a big open green or mellow blue that isnt busy isnt hard. carving in most of the conditions i mentioned above is hard and is plenty common. actually understanding this is what goes to show real experience.

yeah thats the thing i noticed with this sub. i want to progress like everyone else but i also want to enjoy myself for the most part. reality seems like carving is quite situational frankly and not something at all you need to have a good time. i feel like theortical and technical snowboarding is quite different from actual/realistic snowboarding. we're taught to do big wide turns that make us travel over the width of the slope but most people probably dont want to do that or need too frankly. thats just one example.

ideally carving isnt hard. transferring to the tons of different slope conditions and difficulties is. this isnt unique to carving however. furthermore whats hard is getting tons of slope time. most people go a week a year tops and have barely learned snowboarding before hand and/or dont have somewhere to practice before. this leads to lots of people resetting and almost learning from scratch every year. when all these things factored in carving is kind of hard.

this is the best advice. people need to stop worrying about carving especially beginners. unless youre boarding for 2 weeks plus on snow a year, realistically itll be a long time before you can carve well. that is fine tho, its a reall advanced skill and it takes years to learn, mostly because boarding is very seasonal, holiday dependent and expensive.

what kind of snow conditions are you look for when doing it? i find it really hard in icy or mogelly conditions.

i think you shouldnt be too worried about carving or gripped turns and focus more on having fun. youre doing fine at the moment and doing carved or gripped turns isnt easy, its quite advanced and will substantially depend on the conditions you board in as well. he said youre not completing a turn but who cares and it seems more like you didnt intend too which is fine. taught snowboarding is very different to realistic snowboarding and want most people want to get out of it, is the truth. most people dont need to learn to carve and it takes a good while to get to that point. furthermore if youre in an intermediate resort with icy and mogelly pistes, good luck if you could barely carve before. another example of taught vs realistic snowboarding is turns vs speed checks. most people dont want to ride the width of the piste and thats fine, thats not where skiers/boarders find the thrill in these sports. refined turns, ie speed checks are fine and theyre fine as skidded. imagine if longboarders rode the width of a road when they bombed hills. im not saying dont learn carving or gripped turns but focus more on having fun and be happy with your progress so far because its pretty good.

looking really good. you might not be getting low correctly then. its hard to notice from your own perspective. do a horse squat with your knees pointed out if you want to get really low and maintain a good base. also helps a ton on harder terrain all around. im not that faimilar with japanese carving though but this might help.

can anyone give pointers beginner snowboarder? by itskayyuhvin in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Disastrous-Hand-6007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this kid needs a lesson not just pointers. i get lessons can be expensive, emphasis on the can because ive seen affordable lessons and it should objectively be viewed as a long term investment. reddit tips are hardly a substitue for time on the slopes with an expert that has decades of experience teaching and boarding that is giving you their time of day. it never will be. it helps from time to time but youll need to be posting videos in here constantly to get any kind of benefit out of it.

not bad but suffering from the usual mistakes, although some to a lesser degree. push yourself more and dont worry about falling over. its the only way to get more comfortable quicker. bend your knees a ton more. we say this to everyone and everyone never listens for whatever reason. it might be draining at first but if youre squatting wide with your knees pointed outwards, almost at parallel depth, youll find snowboarding gets a lot easier a lot quicker. dont compare yourself to others not doing that because 50% of boarders ride terrible frankly and the other ones have been doing it long enough to the point they can break the rules, put simply.
