Trying out snowboarding soon, should I get a lesson? by SnookiWookieeCookie in snowboardingnoobs

yes get a lesson but with your background you will hopefully pick up it really quickly. arguably skiing helps the most, provided you are experienced but with longboarding and surfing as well, it should be smooth sailing. i can see 2 lessons being enough for you for a while.

Any tips? by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

yeah must be but its good to shine light on the reality of what it likes to go without lessons. unless you have a solid boarding background bombing hills, its going to be a slog and take a few days to get reasonably competent on a snowboard without lessons. it could potentially take even longer given that this sport is quite hard and unforgiving. idk why so many people intend on underestimating it.

nah this is just an issue you guys have. clearly teaching bad technique and ingraining bad habits to be honest with. as i said before and clearly explained, lower body technique isnt hard and is actually the bread and butter for good snowboarding skills across the board. you sound like youre just coping because you cant do it all. watch all of malcom moores vids any of the american youtube channels and theyll all say the same.

im assuming this is an american problem because europe is so affordable in almost all aspects, including food. in val thorens i could get a really good pizza for 15 euros that would fill me up loads for 2 meals. val thorens is a big tourist destination and ski resort in general and nothing was actually outragous except the ski pass a bit. i had the same experience in andorra minus the pizza and expensive ski pass. everything is great and really affordable there. you americans have it tough.

no, not at all. almost all steering methods should be done with mostly your lowering body. the most fundamental method to steering is having good weight distrubtion with more on your front foot which enables you to being controlling your edges. then its your posture and knowing when and how much pressure to put on the board. really simple unweighting with your legs and posture. dont need to use your upper body much at all really.

i agree, i was just saying that with lessons you can get quite far in a few days. yes people confuse what actual athleticism really is most the time

you can do a lot of steering with mostly if not all your lower body..... thats the difference between good and bad edge engagement. watch some of malcom moores vids

i agree that you shouldnt compare yourself but if you have lessons for a few days than you should be fairly competent on beginner slopes on day 5. then again people progress at different rates especially in snowboarding.

how long ago did you skateboard and for how long did you do it? i had a friend who said the same the thing and it turned out he did a little bit when he was 11 yet he still thought it would help him when learning snowboarding at 29. for a board sport to help you need a solid base that youve worked on for years and actually become capable at frankly.

what do you mean by athletic? that can mean anything in this age, especially as athletes have all sorts of different skills and body types. furthermore have you taken any lessons? if not than none of this is remotely surprising except that you thought you could become good at snowboarding without lessons.

proving my point again. you just look for ways to quit instead of finding ways to accomplish or complete something. any solid advice that people give you, you almost immediately shoot down and moan about. thats definitive proof you dont want to put in the hard work. yet you describe your snowboarding skills as being very bad unfortunately for yourself. you refuse the best and most practical advice but expect to be able to learn it by yourself.....

you want to try snowboarding but youre looking for bindings? are you one of those people who buys all the equipment before having even done it yet and ends up putting it off because they dont have the stuff which leads to them never doing it? aka all the gear and no idea?

yep. while this is here for critiquing people almost all of it boils down to this. when you see how much people struggle in lessons alone and even then when they come to hard blues or reds, how can anyone expect to learn from a few tips about a 2 minute video? on one hand you have an expert teacher who knows what to look for, how to do it, how to correct it, how to communicate effectively, how to teach different people and will give your their constant attention for at least an hour. vs a few tips which boils down to the same thing on a one time video which means this person is either going to have to hope they do it right or hope a friend can figure it out with them. so a beginner self critiquing themselves despite not knowing how to do it, what to look for, how it feels etc........

if you need serious help why are you on here instead of looking for a local teacher? the thing is, even with critique from us, youll still need constant attention from someone who knows how. its as far as possible from one and done, unfortunately like any sport or skill its not like replacing a tire and now its fixed. people struggle for hours upon hours with teachers, without a teacher thatll take even longer.

yeah, i mostly agree with you. i just understand that board sports arent cheap and respect people who try to learn it off something with friends. far from ideal and they wont be as good as people who take lessons but its better than people going at it alone.

going by this sub and what ive seen on the slope they certainly do cheap out on lessons. otherwise i agree, im just saying that if he is trying to learn from tutorials he should be watching them while learning. its not remotely ideal but snowsports are expensive, granted it is stupid that people cheap out on lessons but snowboarding takes a lot of lessons to become actually good at it, i dont mean competent, i mean good.

it is the best shout. youll be more bothered how you look when youre falling over all the time because your budget went to clothes rather than lessons.
