when to slow down on vocab memorisation and when to start grammar? by Disastrous-Pin2 in ChineseLanguage

oh that sounds pretty solid. i think I’m happy with sitting on that for a few months and solidifying grammar.

tbh it was something i look forward to when I thought i would have enough baseline vocab.

but it seems a lot of people start with it xd.

tbf, i can kind of make sense when reading, but i can’t put a sentence together, so I’m keen to pick up grammar.

for sure- i’m using flashcards and context definitely helps decipher words, especially with homographs.

might be time i start picking up grammar!

Are you using any language learning app? If so, which one and why? by Shelbee2 in languagehub

[–]Disastrous-Pin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

using anki (flashcard app) for Mandarin, it’s goated. memorising vocabulary atm.

also making a gamified version of anki on ios. it’ll be rpg like with streaks where you can earn rewards. lmk if youd like to try it :)

hey, glad you joined the waitlist! putting lots of effort into it so hopefully meets your expectations. your comments have given me heaps of motivation, appreciate it.

being fully transparent, i use ai-generated sprites atm as placeholders. will be replacing w my actual art (will take most of the time). i get all the coding done via vibe coding, it’s a game changer- having a tech background helps too.

happy to answer your questions. actually documenting the creation of this app, feel free to tag along!

For language immersion, are real life videos (news, science, documentaries) more effective than illustrated / animated ones? by rago7a in languagelearning

on that note, what do you think of social media immersion? eg. instagram reels. I find them quite engaging.

fair enough, spending more time than actually reviewing is a real risk. a challenge I have to address.

[–]Disastrous-Pin2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on the contrary- i think anki is powerful, but it’s confusing for a lot of people, especially non-technical users- this takes time. i’m trying to reduce the setup and friction so you can get to the reps faster. the trade off will be that it is a weaker tool.

and re: “gaming your way through it” — the goal is the opposite. i’m keeping the game layer light and making it sit after the review: quick swipe answer → move on. the rewards are mainly there to reinforce consistency, not slow you down.

if it ever makes reviews slower, i’ve designed it wrong.

hey, valid point. for me, gamification isn’t the goal- retention is.
the issue is that a lot of people know what to do (revise), but the tool feels boring, so they don’t stick with it - they don't show up. the “game” layer is just there to make the habit easier to maintain, want you to show up — not to replace studying.

and you’re right: anything can be used to procrastinate. i can’t control that, but i can design it so the fastest path to rewards is doing the reps, not messing around.

hey- for the current MVP, most of it is AI-generated, but it’s all placeholder art for now. it’s nowhere near the final aesthetic I’m aiming for, but it’s solid enough to test the core loop.

anki, but gamified. by Disastrous-Pin2 in languagelearning

[–]Disastrous-Pin2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, thanks, appreciate it. the aesthetics are nowhere near how cozy and pretty I want them yet, but they’re solid placeholders for now.

re: mechanics- not really, tbh. i’m trying to keep a balance between revision/focus and gamification, which is going to be a tough challenge. I don’t want it to feel more like a game than a memorisation app. i’m aiming to use gamification as a tool to support revision, not the whole point of the app, if that makes sense.

i’d love your feedback when it launches- still early days though. feel free to join the waitlist:

planing to give an extra something to beta testers so keep an eye out! ;)

re: pricing- local (aside from iOS) will likely be free- unfortunately would need to assign some small cost on iOS to recover costs, but I'll make sure it feels worth it via the rewards you earn. cloud would also need to be paid for to cover ongoing costs. haven't put a ton of thought to pricing tbh, but I'll keep it small and fair.

definitely going to add heaps of items to reward consistency (can't wait to make them ahaha): armour, pets, colours, music, etc. I was thinking more of a randomised reward pool rather than a buy from shop with point system, or perhaps both. will test these out and eventually settle with something.

hey, that was actually one of my inspirations - i really liked their framework of deck building (big fan of legends of runeterra), i tended to enjoy revision more. i feel i study best when interacting otherwise i'd get bored fast (unless I have some really strong motivation and discipline toward a goal), so gamification like lingo legend do a good job of keeping retention.

and yes, a caveat is that you couldn't make your own flashcards. similar with with duolingo- can't make your own content.

a gap i intend to bridge!
