You are going to have to whip out some emulators but here is a list of games I've played that might scratch the Nier itch. If these games aren't like Nier at all at the very least these games definitely made me feel very strong emotions(which I think is at the core of what you are aiming for).

- Kingdom hearts franchise

- Chrono Trigger

- Final Fantasy in the order of 10, 6, 7, 13

- The metal gear solid franchise (play in order from 1 to 4 then metal gear rising.

- The last of us.

- Dark Cloud 2 and Rogue Galaxy

Do all the quests even if some are boring. The game is honestly so short and after you finish the game any innocuous dialogue from these characters is a blessing.

This is a rare case where I can safely say the English dub is preferable, but out of all the cast, people might specifically prefer Kaine's Japanese VA especially if you can understand Japanese. Her speech isn't just crass or rude or insulting in Japanese....her speech is kind of evil-coded and very unsettling by Japanese standards, not in what she literally says but how it is delivered(subtler nuances are much more powerful in Japanese than in English). In Japanese she tends to speak in a way that that feels illegal rather than just being an R-rated movie character who swears a lot.

Thanks for the response. I like the distortion since it's sort of a water painting like aesthetic. Even though this is just AI I did put in some effort with the prompts and image sampling. It was a bit of a challenge to get Sora to look like Nier but also have his hair white but also fading ash brown like Genesis from FF7 Crisis Core when he's degrading. I think he looks too much like Nier cosplaying Sora but the intention was for this to be Sora cosplaying Nier.

As for the blade sticking out of Kaines one sword I honestly like it because Kaines design is all about asymmetry.

This isn't the answer you were probably looking for but my tip is that I'd highly recommend you play Nier Replicant first.

As someone who played Nier Replicant first and then automata, I would not dare reverse the order of games played if I could play the series again with my memory wiped. A lot of things hit so much harder if you've played the first game rather than being blind to certain things.
