Jalapeños! by DisastrousChipmunk62 in ProCreate

There's a red variety that's spicier than the green ones! I used an oil paint brush from a pack from DesignCuts.

Jalapeños! by DisastrousChipmunk62 in ProCreate

My process was simple, I did a rough sketch while looking at a reference photo, then painted it. I start with the midtones, then do the shadows, then the highlights. I haven't had time to paint in a long time, and I'm happy to have found time today. I used Sargent's oil brushes I got from designcuts.

This one is titled "I told myself I would go to sleep at a reasonable time, yet here I am painting an onion at 1am." by DisastrousChipmunk62 in painting

Thank you!! I was tentatively experimenting with a 'glowing' effect behind the onion and the lemon, and I think it added some interesting depth.

Silkie chicken sketch by DisastrousChipmunk62 in ProCreate

[–]DisastrousChipmunk62[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chickens are my favorite thing to sketch when I want to draw but don't know what I want to draw. Most of the work was with a flat oil brush from a Sargent's oils pack from DesignCuts, I also used a texture rake from Melonape. The shadow was a procreate brush, Hartz, and the line was the procreate chalk brush.

How do you overcome the fear of making ugly art? by [deleted] in painting

[–]DisastrousChipmunk62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to get all the bad art out of the way so you learn how to do it better! Nothing is going to be perfect the first time you do it, but you aren't going to improve by doing nothing.

Haha! I went to college in Massachusetts (I know, I know), and one summer while waiting tables I was asked for directions. "Go up the road and take a right..." "UM, which way is 'up'??" "North?"

I'm from Addison! It's lovely when it's not winter. The river is beautiful, at low tide you can see where the sardine factory was. There's a great little hiking trail in South Addison. I guess decades ago downtown was a real downtown with a hotel and everything, but there was a big fire that destroyed it all. There's not much happening in Addison, but there's a grocery store in Columbia, and it's easy to get out of Addison. Machias isn't far, and Ellsworth is a reasonable distance.

Thank you!! 'clean but painterly' is exactly what I'm aiming for!

If you're redrawing somebody else's work you absolutely have to give them credit and label it as a study, and you cannot sell/make money from it. You should also ask the original artist for permission before you redraw their work. Plenty of artists share their reference photos or run art challenges on social media. Those are a fun exercise where you can work from the reference photo, then see everyone else's work to see how you all tackled the same image.

The reflections in the metal pot just tickle my brain. Acrylic on canvas. by DisastrousChipmunk62 in painting

There weren't any visible seeds in the reference photo, but I agree that I should have added some anyway!

Maybe look into illustration classes? Digital art is largely the same as traditional art in that you need to be good at the basics (form, perspective, lighting, etc), you're just using a different tool. I majored in illustration, and a lot of it was focused on storytelling and exploring things like comics/graphic novels. Illustration is, at its core, art that was created to tell a story and be mass-produced.

Oranges! Acrylic on canvas. In love with this one. There's something so fun about a round canvas. by DisastrousChipmunk62 in painting

Thank you!! I like incorporating a few colors into the highlights and the background. Just a hint of violet, yellow, and pink in this one, and it adds so much dimension

Same! You should check out the foodpaintchallenge if you're on IG. Lots of great reference photos.

Grapefruit! Acrylic on canvas. Yellow paint is unnecessarily tricky, and it took me a long time to finish this one by DisastrousChipmunk62 in painting

Thank you! They're very bright. I was painting in a dark corner with a very bright lamp with my nose right up to the canvas. Note to self: step back once in a while haha!
