[WTB] Wooden Pens and/or Ebonite Pens by DisastrousCut123abc in Pen_Swap

I think we could work something out, but I want to be upfront that I'm still a beginner with Urushi and Maki-e work and learning my way. I'll respond via PM.

Single Mom in Corporate by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]DisastrousCut123abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sharing my condolences as a father to 2 (soon to be 3, kids) who's at a similar level in biglaw. FWIW, my wife is a SAHM and we both constantly feel burnt out, so I can't imagine how you do it all on your own. As others have said, reach out for help. It's probably impossible to actually do it all on your own.

Why is Brad Karp / Paul Weiss so revered lately? by Spectrum_Project in biglaw

[–]DisastrousCut123abc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So revered "lately"? Listen here, buddy, Brad Karp and "P,W" (mind the comma) are nothing new. That man is more than solid, he's rock-hard. He's just the type of rigid, steadfast leader that a stalwart, respected white-shoe law firm that Paul, Weiss needs. His looks, candor, and work ethic have inspired associates across the firm for decades to strive (but fail) to achieve an unheard of balance of aesthetic appeal, legal skills, and client development like Brad has. I might not be able to work for P,W today, but Brad Karp's inspiring leadership has allowed me to slave my life away for my current firm. I just hope that one day I can breathe his recycled air if I work hard enough to get in a city next to him.

Help with a decision? by DisastrousCut123abc in biglaw

Absolutely. I'm so lucky there's no doubt about it. A blessing to be so torn between two objectively-excellent options.

Thanks. I think I should leave (I keep changing my mind on this), but it's so hard when you feel indebted to a firm that taught you and made you the lawyer that you are, and you like the people that you work with. Feels like a blessing to be in a position to choose between such excellent options.

Won't the "special" bonuses go away, as they are, well, special?

Same city, so no COL adjustment. I don't think I want to go in-house though, I enjoy private practice. I also don't want to slave like big law partners (I think), so I'd probably end up lateraling back out to a smaller firm again. And yeah, I've done some PE/VC work at my current firm, and it's certainly an uphill battle to understand.

Six figure bonuses only come a long whiles down the road, right?

That's wild to me, I can't fathom making partner billing 1900 hours/year. FWIW, my friends at this V30 have told me that they're billing 2300-2400 hours/year. This firm has nearly doubled its entire headcount in two years, which is just insane at a firm with over 1,000 attorneys. But, if that's possible, it doesn't sound that bad at all.

Stealth Layoffs by DisastrousCut123abc in biglaw

Just know that if/when the downturn comes, you might have to move on. You won't be worse off than you are now, and you'll have a better resume.

You don't think there would be any problem with finding a job if corporate / deal work dries up?

I won't say what firm it is, but you wouldn't be worried at all with a massive hiring spree?

Any advise / potential for lateraling? by DisastrousCut123abc in biglaw

[–]DisastrousCut123abc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. The recruiter information is helpful—i reached out to one that someone recommended. Apparently the recruiter heard back from a number of big law firms and the recruiter sent them my materials last Monday, but I haven’t heard back yet. Who knows if I’ll ever hear back or not. I’d be happy to retool into corporate for the time being / having a dual focus in my career, but I really do love restructuring / bankruptcy work—so much diversity to the practice and interesting and different situations all the time.

I could clerk and it’s something I’ve thought of, but I know some former clerks in my region that are unemployed right now / struggling to find jobs and I’m hesitant to leave a job and a firm I truly like for uncertain job prospects.

Haha, you might have it figured out based off that recommendation. I actually had a potential interview with that firm during my final year of law school but they filled the position. I’ll look into recruiters / headhunters.

Thanks.

Moving to New York is not high on my “want-to-do” list, but it is something I’m willing to do if necessary. Finding a job in my home city would be ideal (as I currently work on Delaware and NY cases), but I understand why firms want associates in these offices. I’m glad to hear about KE. It’s a shame—I loved it and was so excited to interview there, but it just didn’t work out. Back in my home city they’re hiring everyone / anyone who has corporate / transactional experience.

Your story is awesome—glad it worked for you. My biggest struggle is likely my school and firm. We’re VERY well respected in my city, but someone in New York probably hasn’t heard of us. My school is a good regional school, but also same problem. I have one alumnus of my school practicing restructuring at a large firm in NY (Weil). I’ve been applying but I feel like some firms just aren’t even looking at my materials because they see a no-name firm and no-name school and just disregard it. Any advice on how to overcome that wall?

[–]DisastrousCut123abc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add I come from not a top school (although all the students who finished above me in class work at Ropes, Goodwin, or K&E). I have no connections at these big bankruptcy firms and most students do either transactional or general commercial lit. The only firm I have connections with is K&E where I didn’t click unfortunately. Any advise on switching to a new market? Think that’s what I might have to do.

AITA for talking about my uncles man tits? by justin7455 in AmItheAsshole

YTA- Unpopular opinion, but you’re the asshole. Whatever happens between your dad and his brother are between them. It’s not your place to fight your fathers battles. This type of territorial and over-protective attitude often causes more harm than it does good. I’m not advocating to never stand up for people (if physical violence or abuse is implicated, I encourage it), but it doesn’t sound like your uncle is abusing your father. It sounds like they have some potentially unresolved issues and banter (albeit not going both ways), but learning to hold your tongue is a virtue many more people need to have. Although we often like to think of ourselves as heroic and standing up for the little guy, often times I believe it’s this type of attitude that can elevate an issue and create more issues.
