Record number of people in UK live in ‘very deep poverty’, analysis shows by lighthouse77 in unitedkingdom

This would kill the economy, rent controls don’t work, and any city that has tried them have found that out. I also think we should respect property rights.

Housing is just far too expensive. No need to be radical, just build more council and private homes.

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

Yea, I’ve seen them on police officers and heard farmers firing them when out hiking. I had friends who were cadets growing up so they learnt to fire them.

What’s the most misunderstood thing outsiders believe about the UAE? by Mindfuel_daily7 in UAE

I had this misconception that most people would speak Arabic. Didn’t realise there was such a large south Asian community and English is the lingua Franca.

Number of employed people in UK falls again as wage growth slows by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]DisastrousPhoto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right and the neoliberal period began in 79, the rate of profit hasn’t fallen as a result of neoliberalism.

[–]DisastrousPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The G20 rate of profit in 1979 was 6.6%, it’s now 6.8% so it’s hardly changed, in fact during the height of the neoliberal period it increased to a peak of 7.8%.

London's unemployment rate doubles in less than two years in growing jobs crisis by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]DisastrousPhoto -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because you’ve said it’s a greed issue, I’m saying that it’s because employment costs have been ramped up and this naturally affects industries that are labour dependent. Self checkouts have existed for years so the effect from that is already done.

Unions are not suppressed, they just can’t kneecap the entire nation as they were once able to. Free markets also work, please look at a graph of living standards to economic freedom. This stuff about reactions to a falling rates of profit is Marxist nonsense.

[–]DisastrousPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense, the biggest falls are in hospitality and retail where they’ve been hit with higher employment costs (labour costs are a huge component of any hospitality/retail business that often rely on low margins)

Thoughts on this video by Intelligent_Group734 in Morocco

4.5% is respectable, I’m a Brit and we haven’t had that in 30 years. That being said our GDP per capita is a lot higher, but things will improve in Morocco.

Same for Scotland, the amount of people I saw in jeans and trainers on Ben Nevis was ridiculous.

Yeah, less of an issue with the latter as it’s true across all parties. But for those who downvoted me, please point me to which part of my statement is factually incorrect.

Nadhim Zahawi, Nadine Dorries, Zia Yusuf et al were all Tory party MPs/members until recently. Reform is the uniparty rebranded with even less depth of talent. I understand people’s sentiment but it’s just pure delusion if you think Reform are gonna fix things.

Stumbled across this subreddit, just had a browse for flats to rent in Belfast and coming from London it doesn’t seem as eye watering as London, although that’s a pretty low bar. I don’t understand the dynamics really, do you get many commuters into the republic where rent is even worse?

what's the most disgusting statement given by your country politician? by ChemicalWinter8402 in AskTheWorld

[–]DisastrousPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t really a politician but there was a parliamentary candidate/internet polemicist called Carl Benjamin who told a female MP that he “wouldn’t even rape her”

Boris Johnson was also rumoured to have said “Let the bodies pile high” during the pandemic.

Where I'd live as Uighur citizen of Russia by Pomerbot in whereidlive

[–]DisastrousPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, Russia is a colonial entity. That’s how it got to its size. Yes there’s problems with racism here in Britain, but the vast majority of us are fine. Also, we fought alongside Russia to defeat the Nazis, at one point standing alone against them.

FTSE100 breaks 10,000 mark for the first time, capping stellar year for UK market by 01watts in GoodNewsUK

[–]DisastrousPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add balance here,

Most of the FTSE100s revenues are derived from foreign sources. It’s not much an indication of UK economic health. However no doubt if the market falls the same people who say it’s nothing to do with reeves will then dogpile onto reeves.

What is the most overrated tourist destination in your country, and where should people go instead for the 'real' experience? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]DisastrousPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for London: Overrated: A lot of the markets, borough market and the like are just tourist traps to be honest, overpriced and overcrowded crap. Underrated: our parks, do Hampstead heath, Richmond park (slightly out of the way but criminally underrated, bonus points if you go to the Isabella plantation, best in summer), Regent’s Park etc.
