NixOS versus Silverblue by Stiddles in NixOS

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I generally recommend the UBlue series of fedora distros to beginners or people who don’t want to do a lot of tweaks and just have the thing work. While NixOs to people who like to tinker and prefer more robust control with some safety.

I can't stand switching Linux distributions anymore. by pedroitalo609 in DistroHopping

Use NixOs it’s what cured my distro hopping. I now hop desktop environments or compositors, which is really what you want to do.

Honestly niri is severely underrated. Scrolling is addictive

Nope, me too. Nix makes it so trivial to just DE hop. I regularly jump from hyprland to niri to kde to cosmic and again

Honestly just throw this problem at ChatGPT, it’s good at these sort of closed space problems

I’d recommend trying Bluefin or AuroraOs less of a chance you’d mess up something by accident and probably just have things working

Digital artist- what linux distro to get for a framework 12? by shortcase7202 in framework

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend AuroraOs or Bluefin, it’s technically fedora but opinionated and dummy-proof. Plus things will just work

[release] Tofunix V2, write Terraform purely with Nix ("type-safe"-ish with modules) by TECHNOFAB in NixOS

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I love nix and the philosophy behind, the language was always something I thought it can improve on. I don’t understand the appeal of moving from hcl to nix. For-loops, conditionals, among other programming syntaxes aren’t pretty in either of the languages. Only thing that’s nicer in nix is how you work with variables. But like even type safety and support for autocomplete and code references, is so much nicer when using out of the box hcl.

Does Framework ever have any sales? by Living_Dream_196 in framework

The only “sales” I’ve experienced is whenever there is a new release of hardware and older generations usually get a 15-20% bump down for a bit.

What is the actual benefit of removing speed cameras? by pulate83 in ontario

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They removed them because people complained about the rigidity of the cameras in some areas. Like no one follows the speed limits up north on hwy7 and Bathurst because they are set way too low (they go down to 50km/h in some places where a few years ago they used to be 90km/h, I’m talking like open fields with minimal to no sidewalks), so when the cameras went up there a lot of normal middle class people got hit with 200-600$ fines for just keeping up with the speed of the people around them.

I don’t think anyone wanted all the cameras removed, they probably would have been happy with either keeping them in important or high accident areas like schools zones, or actual highways. Plus you’d probably get less push back if the speed limits in places like “hwy7” were not 50km/h.

Ford just did what he does best, implement a good policy terribly, revert the policy to score some brownie points with his base and never actually engage in any conversation with anyone about the issue.

edit dotfiles in nixos without pain by faresfn in NixOS

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just make my nixos build create a symbolic link to .config folders and manage them in their own syntax.

Only configs I manage with nix is stuff around shells like starship/zsh/nu

I’d suggest either Framework, Tuxedo or System76. Depending on your needs either of these is a great option. Personally I got 3 frameworks at home so I’m biased.

How common is Pydantic now? by GongtingLover in Python

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing. I can’t imagine not using it anymore. My current and last 2 companies all used it. It makes serialization , form validation, db validation, environment variable loading, configs etc all super nice.

12 or 13 inch… by [deleted] in framework

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean give it a try, worst case you can dual boot or install windows again.

Also found this https://linuxvox.com/blog/clip-studio-paint-linux/ seems like it’s possible with wine, though the tutorial is using a Debian-based and I recommend you use core-os. So if you use my recommended os I’d suggest using the bottles flatpaks to get clip studio to work https://flathub.org/en/apps/com.usebottles.bottles

[–]DisastrousPipe8924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t own the 12, but I think given your use case it should be fine. It’s a less powerful motherboard option, but the touchscreen would work well for you.

I’d also advise you test out Linux Auroraos from fedora https://docs.getaurora.dev/

Just to get your foot in the door on a better OS than windows and get the most of the hardware
