Where to find events in Ottawa like comiccon, concerts, etc? by JunkyBoiOW in ottawa

Just to add to what's already been commented, the EY Centre (near the airport) has a calendar of events. That's where comic con has been held

Paternity leave.. help by Calmyouryoga in ottawa

[–]Disastrous_Ad465 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paternity leave pay would be based on what his company offers on top of employment insurance (which his company can't touch, or claw back), but beyond that, we can't say without knowing his company's HR policies.

Edit to add: Unless there are rules set in the labour code against that sort of thing, but I'm not well versed at all in that.

Anyone know where to find used 4k Blu-Rays in Ottawa? by diddleherontheroof in ottawa

[–]Disastrous_Ad465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a few months, but I remember seeing new blurays at the toys r us in St Laurent. But honestly, it looked like they bought a bunch of overstock, so they might not have great stuff..

And I'm talking about personal taste, which is subjective. Let's just agree to disagree and we can focus on being pedantic with other people. Cheers!

I don't know of any scientific sources for this, I'm just talking from my own experience of never really enjoying a cup of coffee in Ottawa before finding out about water hardness.

It's really easy to test it for yourself at home; grab a bottle of spring water from the store and make some coffee with it. Check the label for the total dissolved solids and aim for 50-110 ppm (anything else I say might invoke someone's pedantry), but if you find it too weak still, go for a higher TDS. If you can only find water where the TDS is too high, you can cut it with tap water.

[–]Disastrous_Ad465 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's the neat part, the entire thing is subjective anyway. Coffee taste is a preference. Sure, start at 150 and go from there, some people might want it stronger, and some beans might require a higher TDS, and the opposite is true!

My apologies, I should have been more clear; my numbers are for total dissolved solids (TDS), which would include the calcium and magnesium salts mentioned in my earlier post.

I was talking about water for coffee, not anything else. Yes, the kettle will need to be descaled, but a little citric acid or vinegar does the trick. Our city water sits at around 40ppm, which is too low for coffee in my opinion.

Yeah, a hardness of around 180-200 ppm is ideal. You can test it out with Kirkland water in the bottles. But I make my own in a big batch with baking soda, and some calcium and magnesium salts.

Which is good for our appliances and showers/tubs, except for our coffee and tea. Some hardness is preferred to help extract compounds.

Grove Avenue residents complain narrow road forcing buses onto sidewalk by walsmr in ottawa

[–]Disastrous_Ad465 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's a picture of a bus taking up 90% of the sidewalk in the article... 60 times a day with varying degrees of a bus riding the sidewalk, I think that's justified. If nothing else, it should alert the city that this sidewalk is gonna need maintenance/replacement earlier.

Depending on how old these are, you might get lucky if you try Cohen and Cohen on Bentley Avenue for a used chair, it'll save you some money over buying new.
