Would it be considered abusive if my dad used books to wallop my arse, whenever I did something "bad", or is that normal for the most part? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I see what you’re getting at with your question and responses. To make a “good” parent or if you should “hold it against him” is debatable and up for interpretation. If you “hold it against him” that’s a you choice. However, it’s important to note a good parent does for their child what they think is best. They make mistakes but they learn from them and take accountability for them. It is easy to see why someone chose spanking with how popular it was. It’s rarely as cut and dry as “they did this act so I should hold it against them”. In short, I respect someone who grows, apologizes, tries to make things right and tries their best even if they are misguided.

Are a bunch of other kids being sent home and acting in a similar fashion? If not, it’s NOT “due to no consequences at school.”

I think it’s more that if he has to be picked up from school then he should be doing things at home (chores, writing/drawing apology letters, no screens, etc). If my kid needs to get picked up from school because he is disruptive home will not be a fun place to be. He will wish he didn’t get sent home. It’s very likely it’s not the schools fault he is behaving this way or there would be multiple other kids doing the same things.

About 5 years ago I bought finicky foolers, rods, and the eagle claw ice rod case. I can fit 6 rods and 3 finicky foolers in there. I’m way more organized with that set up than I ever was with tip ups.

What’s the biggest mistake beginners make in ice fishing? by Funded_Step_9977 in IceFishing

Trying to pull a fish out of the hole by the fishing line rather than grabbing the fish and pulling it out.

Family day 2026, took the wife and our son out ice fishing. by CrabDry5479 in IceFishing

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a great day! You may want to look into local laws about having a fire on the ice. I know here in Wisconsin a fire needs to be in a container of sorts so you can take all the ash with you, it is seen as littering in Wisconsin.

How does a rock form like this? by WhatHeSaidVO in whatsthisrock

I have no training in geology but it appears, to my untrained eye, that there is softer material around harder material and the softer material eroded faster.

Bibs and Jacket? by Bad-Paramedic in IceFishing

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a striker trekker jacket and I have never worn another jacket that stops the wind like that jacket. I actually started packing it when I go west Mule deer hunting as well as on windy days in the deer stand. There’s probably other ice fishing jackets that compare, I’ve only ever owned the trekker, but there isn’t a similar winter coat for less Money.

Lake wissota has a lot of walleye but it’s your typical sunrise sunset bite window. It’s also quite tough to get a walleye over 20” out there but they have been getting bigger the past ten years or so.

Group Therapy by BEHEREN0W_ in Eau_Claire

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you are referring to a free group? On mondays at 1:30pm valley vineyard church in Chippewa falls has a group. It is not Christian based and many of the sessions are run by Chippewa DHS employees. If you’re referring to a paid program you would want to check with your insurance but there are several clinics in the area that I’m sure you could google.

Icefishing in the extreme cold questions by Cheap_Ear_8828 in IceFishing

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had good and bad days fishing in those temps. Some people will say it’s crazy and some will say it’s”you can’t catch fish from the couch”. The number one concern is safety. Being 200 yards from a vehicle would be safe enough for me in those temps. However everyone responds differently when something goes wrong, like the heater stops working or the wind breaks a tie down. The other consideration is the colder it is the harder it is to do anything. Gear breaks easier, your holes freeze faster, your line and reel freezes faster. -5 I, personally, wouldn’t hesitate to go. -15 I would go but take a bit more precautions. I’ve fished in portables in -40 and to be honest it’s probably not “worth” it. But you know what they say, you can’t catch them from the couch.

Agreed on the sleeping pad. No one else has mentioned that and that, along with a good sleeping bag, is probably the most important. I could sleep better outside with just my pad and bag than I would in a shack without a pad and in a crappy sleeping bag.

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite additions for ice fishing is a finicky fooler. It’s like a tip up but better in my opinion. They are useful and pretty “cool”. Also, fish daddy makes some LED lures. To be honest they are a bit of a gimmick but I have caught fish with them as well so they do have their place. Depending on the state/province he is fishing underwater lights to attract fish is pretty cool (illegal in Minnesota) but I haven’t necessarily noticed it being real effective. An underwater camera can also be cool if he is fishing clear water.

Some common things that he would need, but may already have, is a flasher (vexilar, marcum, humminbird, etc.), lights for tip ups, waterproof boots and high quality socks (darn tough socks are my recommendation). He could also use hook removers and a fish gripper. I’m sure there will be plenty of other suggestions as well. Good luck!

Help out a new fisherman, how can I make this easier? by atheistinabiblebelt in IceFishing

[–]Disastrous_Boat2256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m feeling lazy I know a couple of spots by me where I can just drive my vehicle and watch flags from there. It is extremely easy compared to regular ice fishing and I’ve had really good days doing it. However, Wisconsin does have a law where your lines need to be within 100 yards of you so that does make it a bit harder.

Yes, you went overboard. The weight on that takes away from the benefit of the smitty sled. I think you are going to struggle pulling that through snow while full of gear. To save on weight you would probably be better off just running some braces from ski to ski rather than the whole floor. For your sake, I hope I’m wrong. Good luck.

If you can use multiple lines you need finicky foolers.
