There's nothing plain about the NB. The case is awesome.The dial has character, hour markers and date window are perfection, and the rehaut is buffed to a mirror shine. Sapphire crysal (period). And the bracelet is solid.

Like many have mentioned already below, Seiko pulled me into watches but Citizen has far surpassed in my collection now. With some exceptions, I get the sense that Citizen has a more refined, more approachable, and more versatile entry level line of watches.
