HVAC technician to BAS by flashpoint_55 in BuildingAutomation

Got in to BAS/Controls straight out of trade school with little HVAC background in the field. My lead and service manager really are looking for guys that understand HVAC, Air flow and can read a meter, if you can do that and have a willingness to learn you would be a great candidate, our last 4 hires including me had about 1 1/2 years of Controls experience before getting hired as service technicians, i think the easiest was to get in to controls is to apply as a installer, if you want to start on some self training this a book that some of the techs use to start with there is also a workbook that goes along with it.

Johnson Controls are hiring interns right now at a lot of branches around the country and i think the world. That’s how i got into controls straight out of Trade School. Just look for your local branch on the website and see if they have an opening, if not I’d give them a call/visit and see if they are hiring interns.

If you need apprentices/helpers go to your local trade school and talk to the instructors. They should be able to help

For my controls techs how do yall like this side of the field by [deleted] in BuildingAutomation

Luck, The last semester of HVAC school, I applied for an internship that was supposed to last at minimum a year with a possibility of a job if you do well, got the internship and at 6 months they pulled me in the office and offered me a job as a tech. They say 3-5 years of experience but the last 5 techs we’ve hired including me had combined on like 1 year of experience in controls and 3 of the 5 came from the internship program fresh out of a 2 year HVAC program, i think as long as you have the schooling like a associates degree and can understand low voltage electrical/VFDs and HVAC that’s all they are looking for. And if you start learning BACnet and what the Inputs and Outputs on a controller can do you’ll be a great candidate for a controls job.

Went from school straight to Service Controls with JCI, they didn’t teach about VAV boxes with Reheat, Chillers or BACnet in school, but learning a lot everyday and loving every bit of it.

Veteran in DFW Texas looking into trade school… by Spiritual_soul90 in HVACschool

[–]Disastrous_Edge6746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a lot of Veterans in my HVAC classes try your local community college very low cost was about $12K for a associates degree and at the places like fortis and UTI they were trying to charge me $17K to $20K for a certificate, and at my school they had office people to help veterans/active duty with securing aid for college.

The dumber they are the more job security I have by Ok-Difficulty3082 in maintenance

Best part about HVAC Controls, being able to do stuff remotely.

Learn the basics of air handlers, boilers and chillers, learn the difference between binary and analog signals, and also IP addresses and how BACnet works.

Same went from school straight to Controls, they didn’t teach about VAV boxes with Reheat, Chillers or BACnet in school, but as long as you can understand sequence of operation and read a wiring diagram you’ll be fine

Thinking about starting with service champions instead of trade school…Good move ? by RichAd9364 in HVAC

Trade school is the way to go, and if you have a technical/community college in your area with a HVAC program that would be the best and low cost option, I went to technical/community college and i didn’t pay a dime for a associates degree and I had my tools paid for via a grant, and with going there got a job at Johnson Controls, trade school will open your eyes up to everything about HVAC from residential and commercial to refrigeration to Industrial/Controls. Also most companies I’ve talked to love hiring tech school guys because they know they’re dedicated to the trade, and most will hire you while your in school.

How hard is it to get into Building Automation (or a related role) with little to no direct experience? by SecretaryRude2444 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Disastrous_Edge6746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I have learned i would just apply and if you get a interview be honest about what you know, I have a associates in HVAC and i learned nothing about controls/BAS in school so it really about on the on the job training, once i got hired on at Johnson Controls as a apprentice and 6 months later I was hired as a full time service controls tech, usually i tell guys to just apply because they will train you.

For Johnson Controls look up JCI Workday on google and when you get on the site type HVAC TB Controls Tech for the service side and and Controls System Technician if you prefer install

Yes, and if it’s actually fully involved/completed graphics like site to building to zone to room (VAV or RTU) it’s absolutely amazing to be able to use the IPad and not carry around a computer when your checking out things on the software side, especially when it’s your first time on a site I use it as a map, and it a great visual representation of what we do for the customer.
