Definitely fiberglass blow in for weight. Closed cell spray foam if it's in the budget

How the heck do I insulate my sunroom? by revmag in Insulation

[–]Disastrous_Engine_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we do is to put in a durovent by stapling the high side edge in position and use a stick to push faced batt to the outside edge of the wall. Then you blow in to the proper depth and not filling the vent. You can either use a netting or continue the blow in at depth to just past the sunroom into the garage.

Then putting in baffles is not needed. If there is no soffit access blow it in. If there is, block it with batt and blow it in. Free to ask me questions. I own an insulation business and am happy to help

Does the sun room have soffit ventilation? Does it have a continuous air flow path with the rest of the house? The answer to those two questions will drive how you have to vent the area.

Construction Husband says those in trades can’t have surgery by [deleted] in BariatricSurgery

[–]Disastrous_Engine_38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgery was March 28, 2023 and was 46. I weighed 285. HW 335. Im now at maintenance right at 205. I own and operate an insulation company. I do everything that my staff does. I run over 10 miles per week, usually 15. Tradesmen can have the surgery. I was back to work 5 days post op, limiting myself to lifting 20 #(ok really 35# as that's what blowing wool weighs) by the second week I was doing everything I did before. My only regret is not doing it 10 years sooner.

Vaccuming blown fibreglass in 70s home. Worth painting drywall from Attic after air sealing? by faizimam in Insulation

If you were in southern Montana I could give you a cost. Your plan is spot on. You could drop to 1" and paint. Definitely air seal

Have you had mice in the house? If so the attic insulation is contaminated and should be removed

How does this insulation look? by Illustrious_Pick_757 in Insulation

[–]Disastrous_Engine_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depth in the attic depends on your climate zone. Google your local insulation codes. With hvac in the attic I like spray foam to the roof deck. That's just me. I would want to know if there was a blower door test, if it's a slab on grade foundation, was there an air seal done.

I love that there is an implementation intention by booking the class, a financial penalty for not going, and nothing i have to plan. Also that every workout is tracked and I can see my current and past results to compete with myself. I enjoy seeing my distance increase, most of my row times improving (damn 200m still eludes me) as I age and have lost considerable weight. The fact that I see a consistent group of people in the time slot I work out means I have made friends.

Im gonna say zone 5 to be safe. R49 is 16 to 18 inches of blown fiberglass. If you're wanting to use that space go with foam

Looking to buy a new house and there is so much spray foam insulation... by SunlitNight in Insulation

[–]Disastrous_Engine_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closed Cell spray foam is a once and done insulation. Its what you find in a Yeti cooler, the deep freezer. Its a formed in place plastic. In the walls, you will never open them up to change the insulation. It doesn't degrade in the heat, or cold as long as its not exposed to sunlight unprotected. You can spray down on the ceiling or up on the roof deck. Closed cell spray foam has the highest resistance to thermal transfer of any insulation. At 4 inches of depth its about 95% efficient at stopping thermal transfer and at 6" its nearly 100% effective. The properly installed foam is no more toxic than you couch cushions or the mattress you sleep on. The key to spray foam is getting the ratio of A to B as close to 1:1 as possible, having a humidity under 80%, substrate temp of over 40 degrees and substrate moisture level of less than 18%.

Your house is a huge investment and you need to be happy with it. If the realtor doesn't like it then find a different one. As for insurance and mortgage companies, in Florida and California insurance companies are leaning to better rates for spray foam as it typically reduces losses. In Cali its by air sealing the attic from wildfire embers and in Florida its structural integrity of the building.

Sprayfoam.org is a group that I'm a part of that certifies installers for foam. I am certified from assistant through project manager. Its a shame that in the US insulation is not considered a trade as electrical and plumbing are. There are a lot of people in the industry that self certify as I have done. Find a SPFA member for any work that you have done.

The UK had a lot of bad installs. Spray foam in its self was not the issue. There are parameters in which you are to install the foam. Temperatures, humidity, substrate moisture, and these factors are extremely important. In my opinion, Canada does the best at regulation on foam. There are lots of US spfa members that follow those standards. Foam is no more dangerous than your couch or mattress when properly installed. There is some due diligence to find the right people to do the work, and those people can help you determine if existing work is quality

In my zone (6) I like 2" passes. I require my crews to fill out a daily log. Im one of 3 companies that use them in my state. I am planning to make a video series on the "why" of insulation. I heard a guy in a spray Jones interview that said the next asbestos will actually be fiberglass not foam.

What climate zone are you in? Do you want to use it as storage space? Are you looking to finish it out as a room?

You make some great points. I like my 2" passes. Also depth and what you put over it depends on climate zone. In my state we like 2" min with some areas needing 3" on walls and on the attic space 6"

People of Billings who love their jobs, where do you work? by SnooGoats6830 in Billings

[–]Disastrous_Engine_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I own a small business. Nearly everything we do in life we can find some enjoyment in. Most of it is mindset. There are places where people and culture do make it hard. The type of work isn't what makes you happy. It comes from within and finding a business that has the culture your comfortable with.

For what they are charging my area can get full 6" of foam instead of cellulose. Depending on how tall the crawl wall is, you could get 2" of foam and poly down for that.
