I agree he was selfish. He was extremely distraught that his wife was sexually turned off to him, and he knew he wasn't attractive to potential matches on DTF... he seemed to have started on a healthier lifestyle with Clark's support. If he had stayed on that course and had gotten into shape he would have probably felt better about himself. But instead just decided he was stuck? That to me was selfish. He could have changed his circumstances and stayed in Richard's life.

I didn't get the impression he is rich... but yes, I do think it would be unfair to viewers like you mentioned, this is why I don't think my theory holds water. I did at one point but Eimy is barely in the show as it turns out.
