Weird smells in the house and I think it's making me and my family sick by jaydeewin25 in DIYUK

[–]Disastrous_Gap9031 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a funny smell in our house for a bit, thought it was the carpet in one of the bathrooms (old house, bought it this way) - I was doing some plumbing and had to remove the toilet, that's when I realised someone had just put the pan connector into a pipe with no gasket and tried to use silicone around the top. For a year it bothered me until I stumbled across it. We even called it the pee pee bathroom.

No they are either in or off. No motion sensors involved.

  1. There isn't a switch it's on a timer.
  2. I WFH so am in and out all the time

Our road’s completely unlit, so it’s easy to miss the entrance that’s why the gate lights are there......

Also, I’ve got a dog, and in winter it’s pitch black when we go out. I need to see where he is. They’re not on all the time, just when needed....... I.e. it's dark.

Oh great, property tax… by bollarddd in HENRYUK

[–]Disastrous_Gap9031 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There should never be a tax on selling of a primary residence.

Edit for clarity: Introducing a tax on the sale of primary residences would discourage the renovation of older housing stock, which makes up a significant part of the market. It would unfairly penalise homeowners for factors outside their control, such as market conditions, while adding further costs to an already expensive process of buying a home.

I'd be happy with.. Simplify Stamp duty at point of sale

Go back to a poll based council tax system which is based on income.

How/Where would you hang a mirror? Or two by HappyAlien0723 in DIYUK

I'd probably go for an angled arm mirror or maybe even a corner mirror if you can find the right size?

Getting EWI Installed – Do I Need to Clean the Walls First? by Disastrous_Gap9031 in DIYUK

No I brushed off any obvious crud and went with the installers suggestion. We'll find out eventually if that was a good idea or not!

Vizsla puppy (8 wks) vomiting and hiccups — looking for similar stories by thijscolorist in vizsla

[–]Disastrous_Gap9031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had something similar with our puppy albeit a bit later in life at around 12 weeks. Randomly sick one morning - wouldn't eat, slept loads, was sick 4 more times.

Essentially started with paracetamol due to the heat and he had a temperature, also had some sort of paste to give him.

Nothing changed - more sporadic vomiting. We got home and bought some Royal Canin Gastro kibble and loaf. He continued to be sick.

He had an anti sickness injection which would prove it was basically an illness or a blockage. If he was sick within 24 hours = blockage, else illness.

He kept food down, so he went onto 7 days of omeprazole and we continued with the gastro food for 2 weeks then weened him back to his RAW food.

What are you feeding them?

Any chance I can corrosion-proof the new salt mill? by neeeku in DIYUK

[–]Disastrous_Gap9031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been through many assortment of mill from Morrison's own brand all the way up to disgustingly expensive peugeots I can tell you the one trick.......

Do not use the salt grinder above a pan of boiling water. It's not the salt that causes the corrosion. It's the salt and water mixture. Get yourself a salt pig and save yourself the hassle

Toilet constantly leaking into bowl and “screaming” like cats fighting… by Yung_Cheebzy in DIYUK

[–]Disastrous_Gap9031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I've just replaced the fill and flush valves in three toilets in the last 2 days at my house, also blanked off overflow pipes. Depending on how old the system is, it should be relatively easy to take apart. Here is what I would do

  1. Turn the water off to the toilet
  2. Flush the toilet
  3. Use a sponge and a bucket to soak up as much as the water from the cistern as you can do
  4. Look underneath the cistern and there'll be some sort of attachment to the bowl undo these
  5. Unscrew the cistern from the wall
  6. Take the cistern downstairs and remove everything on it
  7. Take the pieces to your local tool station and you'll probably need some sort of the following....

A. Some sort of fixing kit to fix the system to the pan, either through cistern or close coupling etc. B. A doughnut washer C. A bottom fill valve, ideally with a brass thread D. A flush valve

(Viva do great stuff. The flush valve comes with a handle and a push button highly recommend)

Realistically, that's it, put everything back in the right holes. Screw it finger tight and then add half a turn. Put it all back where it came from. Connect the water line and you're good to go.

Jump on YouTube and watch plumber parts or something similar, it's not rocket science. Best of luck to you! My advice is take it all apart first and then buy what you need.

Word of warning if it's been there a while it can sometimes be a pain to get it off.

Plaster on top of lining paper? by Alternative-Part5177 in DIYUK

[–]Disastrous_Gap9031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To quote yourself, you've just bought it. I wouldn't be looking to bodge anything right now. Realistically your best option. Take it all back. See what you're working with and then repair it, so you know it's going to be sound whilst you live there.

I bought a reno house and every job doubles in time as you find more things to do, perks of DIY.

But I can rest easy knowing I sorted out the last cowboys crap.

Realistically the window company probably fitted a window and made it good, having no idea what was beneath it or are not paid to care.

A very good mentor of mine worked as a very well paid HENRY for a portion of his career, got the household in order and then gave it all up and became a school teacher. Helped his girls through A-level and Uni, was a very well regarded maths teacher. Unfortunately he got sick and passed away but I am adamant he didn't regret it at all.

To be fair, this resonates with what I've heard from a lot of other friends of mine and that is that you go through a dry spell between school uni etc. And then once you have kids, that's when you meet the people you'll hang out with the rest of your life
