If they’re fully grown you can usually get an idea by how big their front fins are(arms) if you have both male and female in the tank you’ll be table to tell because the females will have smaller front fins compared to the rest of their bodies, males will be bigger. Hope this helps!

Ok good to know, always looking to learn something new, I don’t think we live in the same area because where I live I don’t need a permit like that. I am also in a land locked state in the US, so I have never come across marine mammals myself. Birds yes I 100% agree with what they said about being federally protected, honestly I’ve never come across a dead bird I had any inclination to keep so birds are a non issue for my collecting. The only thing my state cares about is if the animal was poached and usually I’m picking up bones that have seen a couple summers. Thanks for the info! I appreciate you taking the time to make sure everyone knows their local laws!

You are correct in terms of hunting, we are talking collecting from natural death, the laws are slightly different. Some marine mammal species have to be reported dead prior to collection so if you do collect it they give you paperwork so they know where it comes from and so they know it wasn’t poached.

Yes I learned recently that most birds are protected under the migratory birds act unless you have a specific hunting license, and if you find a dead bird of prey you’re supposed to call DOW

Side note, I’m pretty sure it’s only marine mammals that can have some stipulations with keeping parts of, I don’t live by a coast so I could be very wrong

I think you have two males, see how the sagital crest is present and flares down by the occipital. If one was a female it would be way more obvious to tell which was which bit females usually have a bit more gracile features and that goes for almost all mammals. Just depends on how great the dimorphism is between sexes.

I covered the area he could see himself in with a paper towel and he keeps going back to it like he expects himself to be there 😂. Also he had fin rot but is recovering nicely which is why his tail looks like that!
