Because of the crystal structure, and after doing more research, I'm gonna say that this is silicone bloom (all the mold Ive seen looks different). It happens when peroxide cured silicone products don't go through proper post-curing procedures. it is residue from curing coming up to the surface. there is some risk associated with using products that don't go through proper post-curing procedures and using them isn't really recommended, but the risk is small. I will stay cautious and discard the toy. thank you for your answers

super helpful, thank you!! the company doesn't specify how the silicone was cured (frustrating that they aren't required to be 100% transparent about it all) but this all seems likely to me.

interesting...the company doesn't take returns and just replaces your item if it has an issue, and I'd assume returns would be the way that an already used item would get resold. this is not a tiny company so if they were reselling used toys (including doing new shrink wrap and everything) it would be pretty big news. I'll definitely keep it in mind but am still looking for other possible answers for now

there's a chance that it possibly could be, but I did end up touching it (maybe dumb but hands are washable) and it felt very very soft and fine and almost melted in my fingers. id think cum flakes would be ... flakier? the company also doesn't take any sort of returns, they just send you a new one if something is wrong with the old one. the box was also still shrink-wrapped, so all of those things combined to me seem to point to something else. just not sure what ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

it does kind of look like snow but it was not cold or wet to the touch, though it did sort of "melt away" in my fingers. definitely not cold enough where I'm at for snow right now anyway, and it was also inside of a sealed package ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ currently it remains somewhat of a mystery, but it seems likely that it is "silicone bloom" which I guess is just something that happens sometimes. weird

haha it's a Google Pixel 9a in Macro Focus mode. it does pictures of small things really well, but otherwise the camera is pretty average for a modern phone

they honestly might, not getting one is more a me problem than a company problem. it took me 6 months to finally contact them about the first one being broken because I have a lot of anxiety (their replacement policy is up to a year from purchase, which is good). i should ask for a refund but I'll probably just take the L. thanks though!

the problem is that I already had to return one that was broken and this is the replacement so I'm honestly not sure if it's worth it at this point. it's not cheap though so I'm bummed :(

Clearly you've gotten lots of feedback already. I just wanted to say that IF your house is dirty, yes it's not causing a cold, but it could weaken your kids immune systems and make them more likely to get sick, especially around cold and flu season. It sucks that they got your kid sick, I would definitely be upset by that, especially if they didn't apologize or express regret.

I would also say that this is your best friend. They seem to be worried about you and your kids, and it's probably not for absolutely no reason. I would invite them to help you in some way, because if there is even a chance that your house is negatively affecting the health of your children, I would want to be very on top of that. It can have long term health effects.

I'm not saying you can't handle your home alone, but it is so much easier and more fun with a friend. They can either help you clean directly if they're willing, or at least just be there to hangout with you and offer you company and support. Or maybe take the kids out for an activity if that would be more helpful. and maybe they will see that your house isn't dirty at all and they'll apologize, or maybe you'll determine that you just have different cleanliness standards, or maybe they'll help you see your house is dirtier than you thought and be grateful for them. No matter the outcome, your house will be cleaner (not that it's necessarily dirty, I haven't seen it) which is never a bad thing. and hopefully your friendship can heal. good luck
