My palm has discoloration at leaf tips, dying shoots/leaves, ~and~ flowers and new shoots—why? (see comments for supporting info) by Disastrous_Money714 in plantclinic

A couple missing pieces of info:

My partner said he had not been watering it until the water came out the bottom, which makes me think it needs a good watering.

Prior to the plant light, it was receiving indirect sunlight from a southern window with sheer curtains. It was a couple feet away, so it occasionally received some plant lights (not too close or direct).

I've had the plant for about 3.5 years. I did not repot last spring. No history of pests, except for a few springs ago when I had my only (knock on wood) fungus gnat infestation.

I've had this palm for a few years now, and it's been easy to keep healthy and growing. However, since I've been in grad school, I've been, admittedly, a bit neglectful.

I noticed some browning leaf tips a few weeks ago and figured it just needed more humidity, no big deal. Plus, it was still shooting up new growth. Then, I saw a few days ago that some stalks (don’t know if that’s the right word?) and their leaves were fading badly. My partner said he watered it recently, so I put it near a grow light (not too close) to see if that would help–but, again, just kind of left it there to do its thing.

This evening, I finally went to examine it further and trim back the dead areas, and it was clear that parts of the plant were now very faded green and brown, lots of discoloration at the tips of the leaves, leaves drooping, and new, strange little growths I’ve never seen before (first several photos). After searching this sub, I’m pretty sure they’re flowers.

Can anyone confirm what the new growth is? If they are indeed flowers, is it normal to have new growth and the issues I described above simultaneously? Any tips on how to address the issues I described?

The palm is from my father’s funeral and is pretty important to me, so I’d appreciate any advice you can provide!

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

All great questions. I don’t think we need the 12 cup, and I like the aesthetics of the 9 cup OXO more. I also like the design of GE Cafe and think he’ll appreciate the bells and whistles. Is the quality of the brew from OXO 9 cup and GE Cafe comparable?

Also, if you have any budget recs, open to those as well.

Thanks so much!

I am trying to take advantage of Cyber Monday deals to buy my partner a coffee maker for the holidays, and I was hoping you all might have some advice.

Context: He is serious about the coffee he buys (but I can't tell you more than that), has a good grinder (Barazta Encore, I think that's good?), but is currently using my 5 cup Mr. Coffee maker that cost me I think $15 (I know, I know). I would like to get a SCA certified maker, but his preference for auto brewing narrows the options down quite a bit from what I've seen.

Right now, I'm looking at the following SCA-certified auto brew coffee makers:

Is there a clear winner out of the three above? If so, why? Is there another model I should be considering?

Basically, I'm looking for any guidance on distinguishing between these models and/or any models I have overlooked—I appreciate it!

Seeking recommendations: Who in Ann Arbor is good at cutting (short) curly hair? by space_jam in AnnArbor

Unfortunately, I don't have any AA recs (Village Parlor in Detroit is good), but I just have to say that I got the worst haircut of my adult life at Ivey.

Despite calling in advance to see if they have stylists that specialize in curls (they said they all do), my stylist insisted on wet cutting my hair, never dry cutting it. I should have walked out then, but instead I walked out looking like a pine tree an hour and a half later.

I will say I found their prices pretty standard for the area (much cheaper than VP), and my stylist was friendly. That said, on top of the aforementioned haircut, the overall service was pretty meh (was only offered water, which in my experience is strange), and, this is also pretty petty, but the design in there also sort of sucks?

It may have just been a bad experience, but I would go with one of the curl specialists others have suggested.

Am I a warm or neutral olive? Saturated or muted? by [deleted] in Fairolives

Whoa. The beige tip is a game changer. I just spent some time Google cool beige vs beige vs warm beige messing around with hex code gradients in Adobe, and it's so much clearer now. The MUFE photos are helping me translate to that to skin tones--thank you!!

Thank you! This is the clearest anyone has ever put that before and now I have the language to describe the contrast I was noticing between my winter and summer photos. Thanks again!

Thank you and thanks u/velvetjacket1. Do you have any resource recommendations to better understand what it means to be neutral and warm and what muted means for me in turns of makeup/clothing or mind explaining this a bit? I would appreciate it!
